Zoey is talking to her friend, Kayla, about Zoey’s almost-boyfriend, Heath. Zoey doesn’t like that he has started drinking lately and Kayla is defending him.
Then, Zoey saw a vampyre standing at her locker. He tells her that night has choosen her and her death will be her birth and that her destiny awaits at the House of Night. He then raises one finger and points at her, and she is rocked by pain in her forehead, where he left the cresent mark of the vampyres.
Kayla starts crying and is already treating her differently.
Now she would have to move into the private boarding school for vampyres, The House of Night for the next four years, if the change doesn’t kill her, that is.
She couldn’t leave school because Heath was out there surrounded by girls flirting with him and of course her car was right in the middle of all of it. So she headed to the nearest bathroom to wait everyone out. She could see her new mark and that her skin was much paler than it’s even been before.
“Just when I thought my day couldn’t get any worse I saw the dead guy standing next to my locker.”
“I’m going to remember this, I told myself sternly. I’m going to remember how awful they made me feel today. So when I’m scared and alone and whatever else is going to happen to me starts to happen, I’m going to remember that nothing could be as bad as being stuck here. Nothing”
“she reminded me of a young version of Sarah Jessica Parker (who I don’t like, by the by—she’s just so…so…annoying and unnaturally perky).”
