So far, we have posted a list of Readalikes for Twilight lovers and Readikes for Wings lovers. What is a readalike? It is a book that has a similar mood, subject, style, or tone to that of another book.
This time, we have Readalikes for fans of Gail Carriger’s ‘Soulless’! So, if you love Steampunk or are interested in the genre, this is SO your list!
But, first let’s start with a book that is a good starting point: Steampunk by Ann and Jeff VanerMeer. The author’s are experts and the book features some of the most talented authors of this unique genre.
- His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
- The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling
- Whitechapel Gods by S.M. Peters
- Osiris Ritual by George Mann
- The Age of Unreason by J. Gregory Keyes
- The Hunchback Assignments by Arthur Slade
- Perdido Street Station by China Mieville
- ‘The Diamond Age: Or, a young lady’s illustrated primer by Neal Stephenson
- The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers

I read THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE when it first came out, being a big William Gibson (and cyberpunk) fan at the time. I remember the first time Gibson coined the word “steampunk” as a bit of a joke in a magazine interview before ENGINE came out.
I have also read THE DIAMOND AGE. I am more interested in what we of a certain inclination call VSF – Victorian Science Fiction. That being science fiction of the period, roughly, and later approximations of that aesthetic. I love Victorian crime and speculative fiction – THE ALIENIST, FROM HELL, Sherlock Holmes (old and new), the films MARY REILLY, THE ILLUSIONIST, etc…
I am a film and video-maker, and a theater director, and that visual aesthetic to me is an endless well of inspiration.
