Evan Rachel Wood’s out as Spider-Man’s Mary Jane. But who’s in?

scifiwire.com: That on-again, off-again Spider-Man Broadway musical originally meant to open Jan. 16, 2010? Now one of its intended stars is off the project, but even so, the creative team has publicly vowed to have the show up and running sometime this year.

Evan Rachel Wood, who back in June was telling us that the production was going to be “a crazy rock ‘n’ roll circus show,” has dropped out of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Variety reported.

Wood was supposed to have played Mary Jane opposite Reeve Carney as Peter Parker and Alan Cumming as the Green Goblin.

Chloe Moretz on ‘Let Me In’ and Its ‘Unglamorous’ Vampires

www.firstshowing.net: Following in the footsteps of other child actors attacking mature subject matter, 13 year-old Chloe Moretz is awaiting the release of her turn as Hit Girl in the comic book adaptation Kick-Ass, and then next she’ll be seen in Matt Reeves’ Let Me In, the remake of the highly praised Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In. As we’ve already seen her as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s wise-beyond-her-years younger sister in 500 Days of Summer, we know she’s got a knack for adult-oriented material, and recently she sat down with Movieline to discuss her challenging career and how Let Me In approaches vampires. You’ve gotta hear what she said.

In what’s probably the best move she could’ve made, Moretz still hasn’t watched Let the Right One In. She discusses how her and Matt Reeves’ approach to vampires is different than all the other movies out there.

Christopher Nolan reveals his plans for rebooting Superman

scifiwire.com: The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, who will “godfather” a new film version of Superman, is speaking for the first time about the project, remaining coy about some details and offering up his take on the venerable franchise. He also confirmed that Dark Knight story guy David S. Goyer will be drafting the script.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex blog, Nolan said:

“It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story,” Christopher Nolan said while sipping tea in the sleek editing suite that fills the converted garage adjacent to his Hollywood home. “And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right.” …

The Internet flurry that included reports that, according to [Nolan's wife and producer, Emma] Thomas, might be better described as fan fiction. The dispatches revealing that the film will be called “Man of Steel” ? and feature Lex Luthor and Brainiac? Or the one about it being a period piece with something like a low-fi version of the hero?

I love The Last Airbender, and am a fan since the beginning. When I heard like two years ago that there would be a movie I never expected that it would look so great. I hope everything goes well and we get the four seasons ;) What do you think of this? Are you a fan? What would you ask M. Night Shaymalan?

As a comic, Marvel and DC fan I think that these two (Spider-Man and Superman) are those stories that shouldn’t have more sequels/remakes. For one, poor Peter will never get to be really happy with M.J, a musical is kinda crazy. Spidy swinging and singing from one building to the others, just doesn’t go. And two, Superman will always be remembered as Christopher Reeve. It’s hard to fill the role of these two characters (Superman and Lois) and the story as it is, is good. The cartoon was good, the TV shows and previews movies were good, no more please. Instead, give us more Batman, that one for some reason does good if you change the actor ;) What do you think of the Spider-man Musical? What do you think of another Superman film?

Sci-fi/Fantasy’s bad reputation is undeserved

my.hsj.org: In high school English class we are made to read many literary works that encompass a variety of themes. However, science fiction and fantasy literature has long been relegated to the niche classes, taught to only the specifically interested and those looking to fill requirements. Works in the genre are rarely considered seriously, but are banished to the basement with the nerds.

Fantasy, a story in which events that are not possible in our knowledge of the world occur, has been around almost as long as writing itself. Sci-fi’s depiction of events that are technically possible or may be possible in the future using scientific knowledge, is more recent, but can still be traced back to the 1800s with works like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds, and Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days. Such distinguished works as those mentioned above clearly come within the realm of science fiction and fantasy, and are considered classics–so why is modern science fiction and fantasy looked upon with a sneer by the classically-taught literate?

How Jane Discovered She’s a Selkie and Got Her Groove Back

inoneeyeouttheother.blogspot.com: Tempest Rising by Nicole Peeler

Nicole Peeler’s debut has them, but the novel also has selkies, gnomes, kelpies, succubae, goblins, elves, and a whole bunch of creatures I’ve never heard of. Peeler embraces a broad cross-section of world mythology, but she makes it her own. She keeps the traditions she likes, and changes what she has no use for. The world she’s created is interesting in its departure from the conventional mythology–for instance the vampire who’s a lover not a fighter. More on him in a moment.

I summarized the novel’s plot in the title of this review: How Jane discovered she’s a selkie and got her groove back. Okay, I was having a little fun, much as author Nicole Peeler seems to be. Tempest Rising is the story of Jane True of Rockabill, Maine. As the novel opens, 20-something Jane is living with her dad and despite being a total hottie is something of a pariah around town. It’s partially due to her oddball mom who ran off years ago, but it’s mostly to do with the role she played in the drowning death of her popular boyfriend. Jane’s resigned to the life she leads and tries to take pleasure in her father and few friends. And then she finds another body in the water.

Is “Science Fiction Humanism” A Contradiction In Terms?

io9.com: People talk about science fiction as the literature of humanism. But actually, science fiction’s explorations put it into conflict with humanism’s tenets. The best science fiction questions the nature of humanity, and whether the universe will let us stay human.

But is science fiction really humanist? Much of science fiction turns out to be about exploring our vast cosmos, and expanding our being. From this quest, one of two outcomes often arises: 1) We meet something greater than ourselves. 2) We become something greater than our current selves. It’s rare, and becoming rarer, to find science fiction that rejects both mysticism and posthumanism. You could even argue that if the journey doesn’t change us somehow, then what’s the point?

Taming The Cyborg

www.thegalaxyexpress.net: The cyborg hero.

Part man, part machine, a cyborg’s physical capabilities easily supersede those of ordinary men. Tinker with their brains in just the right way and you can have heroes with enhanced intelligence as well. Plus, manipulation of their bodies doesn’t come easily (or cheaply), and that’s a surefire recipe for brooding, tortured heroes. Cyborgs put the “flaw” in “flawed.”

They are quintessentially larger than life characters by nature of their superhuman abilities. Witness the popularity of Linnea Sinclair’s Admiral Branden Kel-Paten from her novel GAMES OF COMMAND. Kel-Paten is an example of a romance hero that’s familiar, yet also fresh and inventive.

Do you think sci-fi/fantasy has a bad reputation?

A selkie and a vampire, that sounds interesting. Definitely a book that should go in the collection of the fans. What do you think?

This month OBS’ book club, is The Lovely Bones. A book about a young girl who was brutally murdered by her neighbor, and after her death, the cops can’t find her killer. That leaves Susie with a bit of ‘unfinished business’ so to speak, so her ghost guides the police and her family to finally solving her murder. So for this edition of Must-See List, OBS creator Dawn, complied a worthy list of TV shows and movies about Ghosts.

Must-See TV Shows:

Ghost Whisperer

Synopsis: Melinda Gordon inherited her “gift” — the ability to see and talk with the spirits of dead people — from, and was coached it its use by her grandmother. Running an antique store in a small town, newly married to a paramedic, Melinda helps the ghosts wandering around who are trapped between worlds by helping them to resolve unfulfilled aspects of their former life. (from imdb.com)

I don’t like Jennifer Love Hewitt much, but the storyline is great. Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to communicate with a recently deceased loved one?

Haunted Matthew Fox

Synopsis: Police officer Frank Taylor had the perfect job and perfect family. After his son’s unsolved abduction, his life, marriage and career disintegrate. He leaves the force to become a private investigator specializing in missing and abducted children cases. His ex-wife has come to terms with the loss of their child, but Frank is obsessed with one day finding their son. One day Frank’s life is forever changed while trying to apprehend Simon, a man linked to several child abductions who eludes the police. A fatal clash leaves Simon dead and Frank in critical condition. As the doctors try to save his life, Frank has a near-death experience in which he sees his missing son. When Frank regains consciousness, he finds that the dead can communicate with him, and that their confusing and frightening manifestations are usually intended to help him in his work. Some of the dead however—including Simon—abuse his new abilities to intentionally mislead or harm him. (from wikipedia.org)

Frank Taylor (Matthew Fox) can communicate with ghosts after a near death experience. Sadly, it was a short lived series.

Must See Movies:

Ghost - Patrick Swazye and Demi Moore

Synopsis: Sam and Molly are a very happy couple and deeply in love. Walking back to their new apartment after a night out at the theatre, they encounter a thief in a dark alley, and Sam is murdered. He finds himself trapped as a ghost and realises that his death was no accident. He must warn Molly about the danger that she is in. But as a ghost he can not be seen or heard by the living, and so he tries to communicate with Molly through Oda Mae Brown, a psychic who didn’t even realise that her powers were real. (from imdb.com)

Ghost is such a romantic movie. Patrick and Demi are perfect together in a movie about a loved one coming back to protect their spouse.

The Haunting Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta Jones

Synopsis: In “The Haunting,” a group of insomniac volunteer research subjects travel to a massive old mansion to undergo testing for what they believe to be insomnia studies. What they do not know is that the professor in charge is actually conducting experiments on human fear. As the days and nights pass, the group slowly begins to learn the terrifying secret behind the house’s former owner. They soon realize that the house is pure evil, and they must battle a terrifying spirit to escape the house of nightmares. (from imdb.com)

As a group participates in a sleep study, they realize the house they’re staying in is haunted…..I love this movie, it’s just fun.

Catherine Zeta Jones is hysterical as a self-obsessed fashion-aholic.

So what are some of your favorite ghost movies and TV shows? Why do you think them, what is so appealing about the concept of communicating with the dead?

WHY YOU SHOULD HATE 3D MOVIES

Author: whatategilbertgrape | Filed under: News Blog

Source: herald-review

Yesterday I read that Alice in Wonderland made 117 million dollars its opening weekend. Unfortunately, I was eating a pretzel at the time.

After being heimliched back into coherence, I began to feel like Charlton Heston at the end of Planet of the Apes, instead of viewing the wreckage of the Statue of Liberty, just imagine that American cinema is lying down there in shambles on that beach head.

You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you!

If you had told me five years ago that nearly every blockbuster would be filmed in 3D in the near future, I would have said, “You have a problem, sir. Seek help.” If you had told me that people would gladly pay more money for the priviledge of seeing movies in an inferior medium, I would have committed you myself.

This article is hilarious and sooo true. As all my fellow staff members at OBS know, and some of our fans, I really am NOT a fan of 3-D.  I know some of my fellow staff members agree with me on this sentiment and I am glad someone else out there does too. One of the only times I love to wear 3-D glasses is for a Pink Floyd Laser Light Show.  That type of viewing experience needs 3-D.  Not ever darn movie ever made starting in 2010.  I also agree with the sentiments that if you pay the extra charge for the glasses, you should be able to keep them, not pay a ‘rental fee’.  If that’s the case I’ll spend less money, rent the movie, watch it on my 60″ flat screen with the lights off , with my one dollar  3-D glasses I got from Blockbuster the last time I rented a 3-D flick.  Saves me tons of money. I can see it now…3-D contacts…for those who hate wearing glasses.  Where will the madness end?

Author Seth Grahame-Smith launched a phenomenon with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, his clever twist on the Jane Austen classic. (Grahame-Smith’s follow-up, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, was released this month.)

The success of Zombies has been so huge that a film adaptation is in the works. In May, Del Rey takes the franchise a step further with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic Novel.

This would make for an amazing graphic novel. I will be putting this on my must get list.  I am also looking forward to reading Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Are you a fan of these books? Which have you read? Tell us about your thoughts on the novel. Leave a comment.

Smallville can’t be allowed to break Stargate SG-1’s world record

We MUST stop this. Somehow Smallville must be canceled before it surpasses Stargate SG-1 and becomes the longest running Sci-fi show in North America’s history.

Now I’m not suggesting violence here. Oh no. That’s dumb. But maybe something like what Jericho fans did. They mailed in boxes and boxes and boxes of peanuts to get the show started again. Maybe if we send in cases of green Jell-O seeing as it Jack O’Neil’s favorite desert. I don’t know. Something needs to be done, though.

Stargate SG-1 is the most complete and thorough sci-fi show every created. It ranks higher than both Star Trek and Star Wars in book. Watch the show from the very first NSFW episode through the end. There are complex story arcs and character development found in no other sci-fi show.

LOL@Smallville. I pretty much agree with this article. A shitty show should just end instead of dragging it out.

I loved Firefly. I’m glad to see some of those people on other shows. Do you watch Warehouse 13?
