Roarke and Eve are driving home from a charity event, when a naked woman steps out in the road, covered in blood. Roarke stops just in time and they take the woman, Daphne, to the closest hospital. They discover she’s the wife of a well-known and successful surgeon. She keeps talking about the devil was waiting for them in their bedroom after a dinner party they hosted. The devil attacked them both, secured Anthony to a chair as he proceeded to rough up Daphne and rape her. However, the devil didn’t expect Anthony to get loose and he ended up killing Anthony in the struggle.
Eve quickly goes to the house and investigates the scene. And a search of like crimes leads her to a couple of home invasions and rapes where the perpetrator dressed up like a ghoul and Dracula. Now the assailant has escalated to murder and Eve expects the next time he will up his game and murder again … on purpose.
This case hits close to home for Eve with the rapes and murder. Especially with Daphne who bears all the signs of an abused spouse. Daphne is every bit of the child that Eve was when it all happened to her. Roarke and Mira are right by Eve’s side to help her through any slips she may have while working this case. I really miss the kinds of emotions this kind of case would bring up, in the past, in this series. However, besides a crying jag, Eve didn’t show anything. She chalked it up to her having grown and being able to handle stuff better. That’s great, but I really miss the emotions in this series, and would welcome anything that would bring that back. Anything!
I was able to figure out the culprit in this book as soon as he was introduced. I figured they’d throw someone else at me though, that maybe he was just too obvious, but apparently, he wasn’t. I have a hard time believing he was that stupid to detail all his crimes so easily in interview though, right after firing his lawyer. Granted they already had everything they needed, but still.
Roarke and Eve were a little more doting in this book, but I’m still wanting to see more from them in the romance department. I miss the early days with them so incredibly much, and I just want it back!
Overall, it was a decent read, with a messed-up killer. However, everything is seeming so repetitive and boring in this series now. Nothing sticks out much anymore.
