Katherine Is Way Older Than She Looks: According to Plec and her fellow executive producer, Kevin Williamson, episode 209 is packed with flashbacks to Bulgaria circa 1492 that show us what really makes that diabolical diva tick. But we won’t be seeing Katherine before she was a vampire, nor will we meet her maker.
“We go back in time and show a lot about how Katherine came to be who she is,” Williamson says. “We answer a lot of questions basically. Because I think everyone’s interested in the doppelgänger or how did the line continue. And she’s a Petrova–we get into the Petrova line of it all…We show how she started, where she went, why they wanted her, why she was necessary to the story of the vampires.”

Having been turned in 1864, the duo has witnessed prohibition, a few World Wars (sad), even the first lunar landing. But what were they doing while history was being made? Ian Somerhalder has a few ideas (and they’re pretty swinging).

www.collider.com: During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, Taylor Kinney talked about having wanted to play a supernatural character since he was a kid, making his werewolf different from anything in True Blood and Twilight, how he sees Mason as a good guy who just sometimes does bad things, and that things are going to really heat up between him and the Salvatore brothers.
How did you get involved with The Vampire Diaries? Coming off of a show like Trauma, what made this the project you wanted to be a part of, and were you intentionally looking for something that was very different?
TAYLOR KINNEY: It’s a crapshoot, when you get off of any job. I was in San Francisco for Trauma, and then got back to town and got situated, and started looking at things and passing on things. I think I was around for a month and a half, and there were other projects that were up, but it’s all a waiting game. And then, The Vampire Diaries came up, and I was really interested and read for it. Ever since you’re a kid, you want to play a supernatural character or an action hero, so I jumped at the chance and it happened really quick. I met with people on Tuesday and then I flew out on Thursday and was shooting by Friday.
It took a minute to do all the homework, get acclimated in the city, learn about all of the cast and the characters and who’s what with what powers. That took a little getting used to. I remember my first day on set, looking around and having pretty awkward questions about who’s a vampire and whether I would know if they’re a vampire and if they have any powers that I don’t know about. It was trial by fire, but I got so into it. That’s the fun of it. As soon as I heard about it and read for it, the interest grew. It’s completely different from a medical drama, and it’s fun.
But that’s probably not going to happen in “Plan B,” the episode airing at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 on WGN. The vampire-despising Bonnie does deal with her strained relationships to BFFs Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola). Despite their differences–Elena dates hottie vamp Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), and Caroline has become a vamp–Bonnie still will help them, Graham said.

TVGuide.com: What do you know about the history between Mason and Katherine?
Taylor Kinney: I know that they’ve known each other for a year or so, and it’s a love affair. Maybe more on his part.TVGuide.com: Do you think she’s just using him like she does with everyone else?
Kinney: He’s not [that] naïve. It’s not like you fall for a girl and then you’ve got your blinders on and put yourself out there to get worked. Mason’s not like that. I can’t say he’s going to be just another notch on the bedpost for Katherine in terms of people she’s worked to her own advantage. I just don’t see him being a pawn.
