Summary:
Everyone’s favorite kitchen witch is back in this new cozy mystery from New York Times bestselling author Lynn Cahoon. As Mia prepares for her transfer of powers on Halloween Eve, a murder implicates her boyfriend and his familiar . . .
Besides her witch’s training, Mia has a lot on her plate with her catering business and cooking school in the Idaho town of Magic Springs. As All Hallows Eve approaches, Mia has almost completed her apprenticeship with Grans and must decide if she will join the coven. At the same time, her boyfriend Trent’s familiar, Cerby—an adorable Maltese whose powers are far greater than his six-pound fluffy body might suggest—has flunked out of hellhound training at the werewolf camp. Something about a dragon?
What’s more, the National Office of Magical Creatures has sent an investigator to check out suspicions regarding Trent and Cerby. But when the investigator is found floating dead in the river behind Trent’s cabin with Cerby’s paw prints nearby, Mia’s boyfriend and his furry friend become murder suspects. Now she’ll have to use her own powers of investigation to save them both . . . (Goodreads)
Review:
Seven Secret Spellcasters is the seventh book in the Kitchen Witch Mystery series by Lynn Cahoon. I have read a few of the books (though not all) in this series. It has been hit and miss as to how well I have liked previous books. However, this title in the series has been my favorite to date. I am glad I persevered! The story takes place in Magic Springs, Idaho, shortly before the important All Hallows Eve (of course 🙂 ).
A departure from my previous interactions with this series, I found the main characters have developed some depth with interesting life experiences, especially with all that is going on for Mia. How she kept all the “balls” in the air with so many events happening in her life was very fascinating and enjoyable to read about throughout the story.
The storyline was fast paced, but not rushed by any means. It held my attention throughout and kept me wanting to read far into the evening (when sleep should have been my priority J). I waited with baited breath hoping that Mia could get to the bottom of the murder of the investigator so as to remove suspicion from her boyfriend Trent. And would Mia pass her apprenticeship and be asked to join the coven? Finger crossed. You will have to read the book yourself to find out the answer to these questions along with the many you may have yourself.
Seven Secret Spellcasters is a nice addition to the Kitchen Witch Mysteries Series. The many residents (human, witch or familiar alike) drew this reader into their lives encapsulating a delightful lighthearted foray of mystery, romance, humor, and magic. With a renewed interest in the series and as time permits, I may well start from the beginning of the series and read all the books 🙂
