Chapter 13 Killer
Bella has figured out the truth about Jake and is on her way to La Push to warn him about Charlie and the others hunting the wolves. Bella is appalled that Jake and his friends are killing people but feels bound to protect him. When she arrives at the Blacks’ home, Billy says he’s not sure where Jake is, until Bella lets him know she knows what’s going on. He finally tells her that Jake is asleep and needs to rest. Bella doesn’t care and bursts into Jake’s tiny bedroom and to find him sleeping soundly. She cannot bear to wake him and tells Billy that she will be on the beach when he wakes up. Bella arrives at the beach and rests on a tree that she thinks is the same tree she and Jake had their very first conversation on. Thinking about how innocent and vulnerable Jake looked while sleeping washes all the disgust out of Bella’s head, but she still cannot reconcile that he and the wolves are killing people.
Jake arrives and is happy that it didn’t take her long to figure out the truth, but that quickly changes when he sees her expression. She tries to warn him of the men hunting him and the others, but Jake says they can take care of themselves and that they will disappear soon enough too. Thinking that Jake means the wolves will be killing the men, Bella is mortified that he can think like that. Jacob gets upset because he feels like Bella is disgusted with him and his new life. He calls her a hypocrite for embracing the Cullens and not the wolves. Bella asks if it’s necessary that he and the pack continue to kill people. Jake finally realizes that Bella doesn’t care that he is a werewolf; he is relieved and explains that a vampire is killing people and that the pack is trying to stop him.
