The Gates has become damned good television

We wrote off The Gates after we saw the bland first episode. But ABC’s new horror-soap opera has been getting better and better, and last night’s episode was almost inhumanly entertaining. Spoilers ahead…

Last night’s episode, of course, was written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe, former producer of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Andromeda. And you could tell — all of a sudden all of the secrets and machinations felt much deeper and more complicated. All of the various inhuman characters had that sense of “heightened humanity” that you feel like you get from the best science fiction and fantasy about aliens and other creatures. The Gates has been deepening its world for a while now, but this felt like a gigantic leap forward.

Season Eight of Buffy the Vampire Slayer coming to iTunes

By Matthew Price at News OK

Now, those stories are being adapted to the motion comic format, which uses animation and voice acting to bring comic books into an animated state. The first three issues of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight” are now available through iTunes.

“What we’ve done is we’ve reimagined the world using a motion comic format to bring these characters to life in a way that represents the original work of the brand,” said Jeff Shuter, who produced the motion comics. “(Buffy) started as a movie and was adapted into a television show, and now it’s adapted into this format.”

True Blood Star: I’ll Always “Be Hungry” as Long as I’m an Actress

The skinny on being an actress: You’re always hungry.

So says actress Kristin Bauer, who plays the sexy vampire Pam on HBO’s hit series True Blood.

In a new Movieline interview, she reveals that the entire cast diets and yes, there is a pressure to be thin in Hollywood.

“The other day I realized as long as I’m in this business, I’m going to be hungry,” says Bauer, 36. “The camera really does add 10 pounds. I’m trying to stay under the weight I want to look like on TV. It’s a good incentive to stay slim and is probably adding years to my life… I’m vegetarian, so I live on carbs, but it’s always an effort. After any wardrobe fitting, I hit the gym three times more than the week before.”

I’m torn between being glad that the actresses are being honest about dieting, and upset about how unhealthy and unrealistic that sort of lifestyle is. That kind of pressure isn’t healthy for the actresses, and isn’t a good example for everyone else. There was a picture of Nina Dobrev at the the Teen Choice awards and she is just so skinny, it looks unhealthy. She’d still be gorgeous if she gained weight. And I keep forgetting The Gates is on, but I missed the first few episodes and the earliest one on Hulu is episode 3. So I might wait for the DVD. But even great shows can have crappy pilots. Good pilots are actually pretty rare.

Have you seen The Gates? What do you think of Buffy‘s comic being changed?
