Ron Howard and Will Smith Are Remaking ‘Colossus: The Forbin Project’ For You

What if a powerful computer took over the world!? (How relevant: I own a computer!) Such was the premise of the 1970 Cold War-themed film Colossus: The Forbin Project, and now it looks like we’re getting a remake of it starring Will Smith, to be directed by Ron Howard. In the original, based on the 1966 Dennis Feltham Jones novel, U.S. and Soviet governments create near-indestructible supercomputers and, having not yet seen WarGames, foolishly give them full control of all the world’s nuclear arsenals. The computers eventually get linked, become one, realize the inherent weaknesses of man, take control–you get the idea.

Is Colin Farrell taking over for Arnold in the Total Recall remake?

Word around Hollywood is that Irish star Colin Farrell is at the top of the list—which also includes Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender—to play the man who buys a virtual, violent vacation to Mars.

Len Wiseman (Underworld) is directing this adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” which was, of course, the source for Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 hit Total Recall. Dick’s original short story dealt in many of the author’s favorite themes—namely, paranoia, delusion and the nature of reality—and it’s unclear if Kurt Wimmer’s script will embrace the story’s cerebral qualities or turn into another action romp, like the Arnold Schwarzenegger version.
