hostage-to-pleasure-psy-chageling-nalini-singhDorian has struggled throughout his life being the only latent leopard changeling in his pack.  He tries to make up for not being able to change by being the best at everything.

“I’m latent. That used to make me angry. But that was before I decided I was going to become a sentinel. My mother thinks I’m pigheaded. I think I know what I want. And no one is going to stop me. No one had better even try.”

But no matter how good he is, nothing can sooth the pain of not being able to let his leopard free.

When Dorian helped save 4 ½ year old Keenan, from the Psy who were using him to keep his mother in line, he instantly fell in love with the boy and his mother, Ashaya.  But now the Psy and a group of radical humans are both hunting down the woman Dorian and his beast love and they will stop at nothing to protect her and their child.

And, when the possibility of curing Dorian’s latency presents itself, will he be able to face the possibility of another heartbreak for a possible lifetime of happiness?

“When you want something so bad it hurts,” he said quietly, “and you bury it, bury it so deep that you convince yourself it no longer matters . . . and someone tells you you can have it, it’s terrifying. What if you take the chance and you’re wrong? What if you let yourself feel the loss and it’s this huge pain and you can’t put it back in the box?”

After reading the previous installment to the Psy-Changeling series, Mine to Possess, and we got a bigger glimpse of Dorian, I couldn’t wait to read his book.  I knew that his mate was going to be Ashaya, but it was still fun to watch it all play out.  I enjoyed their relationship and I loved seeing Dorian’s parental side come out.  He was so sweet with Keenan and I enjoyed seeing that side of the tough sniper.

I also thought the epilogue was endearing when Dorian was presented with a situation he had only dreamed of.  Again, something else I expected to happen, but it was a lot of fun to see.

As I said, I enjoyed this book, but I think the lack of surprises really kept me from loving it.  It was good and very sweet, but not great.  It was definitely worth the read, though and I can’t wait for the next book!
