SYNESTHESIA:

A neurological condition characterized by automatic, involuntary sensory perceptions triggered by seemingly unrelated stimuli.

There is something unusual about Dr. Jenna Ramey’s brain, a rare perceptual quirk that punctuates her experiences with flashes of color. They are hard to explain: red can mean anger, or love, or strength. But she can use these spontaneous mental associations, understand and interpret them enough to help her read people and situations in ways others cannot. As an FBI forensic psychiatrist, she used it to profile and catch criminals. Years ago, she used it to save her own family from her charming, sociopathic mother.

Now, the FBI has detained a mass murderer and called for Jenna’s help. Upon interrogation she learns that, behind bars or not, he holds the power to harm more innocents—and is obsessed with gaining power over Jenna herself. He has a partner still on the loose. And Jenna’s unique mind, with its strange and subtle perceptions, may be all that can prevent a terrifying reality…

Review:

Strangely enough this is not the first book I have read where the main character has “synesthesia” which is described as – a neurological condition characterized by automatic, involuntary sensory perceptions triggered by seemingly unrelated stimuli. Dr. Jenna Ramey sees or senses colors that connect to different things and different people. Color Blind is the first in a new series starring this interesting doctor who is an FBI forensic psychiatrist. Her special trait is one shared by the author herself. I think this makes her more readable and interesting. This is definitely a different mystery thriller.

As with a lot of firsts in a series, the characters are foreign to the reader and it takes a while to get in their rhythm. The writing is interesting and it is most assuredly thrilling. Jenna is called in to help the FBI interrogate a mass murderer. She finds out this psychopath is more than he seems. Not only is he not working alone, but he also has some information about Jenna’s mother Claudia. If not for Jenna herself, her mother would still be on the loose killing those she loved. How does this man know about her serial killer mother and aspects of her own life as well? Twisted and manipulative, will this man get to Jenna or will she be able to get to the facts and find the answers she needs?

This is an intense thriller filled with bizarre characters and lovable ones too. There are a couple of mysteries at work here and the reader is taken on a wild ride at points. Some slower sections are to be expected in a first in the series. Jenna is an interesting main character and her approach to interrogation and behaviorist profiling is unique and most times fascinating. Everything needed for a really enjoyable and thrilling mystery is in Color Blind. Yet sometimes it did stumble a bit. I am looking forward to the next in this series as I am sure it will just build on this distinctive subject.

I would recommend Color Blind to any reader that enjoys thrillers, well written mysteries and unique characters. It is well written and intriguing. The main characters seem to be developing, while the criminals are in full bloom. Dr Jenna Ramey is going to be an interesting protagonist and I look forward to more in this series. This enjoyable read is packed with mystery, thrills, action, and even a bit of romance.
