Synopsis:
It was supposed to be a fun day, shopping at the mall with her best friend. Then the panic attack started and Kaylee Cavanaugh finds herself screaming, unable to stop. Her secret fears are exposed and it’s the worst day of her life.

Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit.

She tries to convince everyone she’s fine–despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she’s crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities . . .

My Soul to Lose is the prequel to Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers Series. Kaylee Cavanaugh is a pretty normal teenage girl, hanging at the mall with her best friend Emma, plotting out revenge on her ex-boyfriend Toby who had dumped her and a week later asked her best friend to the homecoming dance! But the fun trip to the mall suddenly, turns into a nightmare, when Kaylee sees a boy in a wheelchair and for some reason she can’t understand, she feels the urge to scream. Ever since she can remember, she has always had this need to scream at certain times when she’s near certain people. She doesn’t know why it’s always around people, people she doesn’t even know. And then there are the mysterious shadows she always sees hovering around the person who becomes the object of her panic attacks.

Upon seeing the boy in the wheelchair, Kaylee starts to scream-and loud! She wakes up in a mental hospital, strapped to a bed. Kaylee goes through the motions, knowing if she follows the rules, she’ll be set free that much faster. But just as Uncle Brendon promises to come get her and freedom is only a couple of hours away, the panic returns, this time stronger than it’s ever been before, the screaming struggling to burst from her lips. Just as Kaylee is about to give in, a fellow patient, Lydia drags Kaylee away from the chaos being caused by another patient and into Kaylee’s room. Lydia tells Kaylee she can help her, all she has to do is give Lydia her hand. Kaylee complies and feels the unbearable panic start to disappear and she’s able to gain back control over herself but there is a price she wasn’t aware of and Lydia has to pay it.

My Soul to Lose, like a really good movie trailer, offers you a glimpse into Kaylee Cavanaugh’s world and leaves you desperately needing to know more! Sarcastic and defiant yet at the same time innocent, Kaylee is a strong female lead. You will find yourself drawn to her like an old friend. Rachel Vincent does a wonderful job at building tension and emotion throughout her scenes.

For all you Young Adult, paranormal fans out there, this is a great novella to pick up and you can continue Kaylee’s story in My Soul To Take, My Soul to Save, and the third installment My Soul to Keep which was release June of this year. The fourth installment will be released January 2011.

This was an intriguing and quick paced read. Great beginning to what looks like a very promising series!
