Rephaim was almost near Mayo building when he felt Stevie Rae call him. When he arrived at the ramshackle mansion, Stevie Rae went directly to his arms telling him how much she had missed him, staying like that for what seemed like a long time. Rephaim told her how he had felt her sadness toward Jack’s death and how Neferet had offered him as a sacrifice to Darkness, yet they couldn’t prove anything of what had happened since she didn’t need to be present at the time of the accident to do it. Stevie Rae explained her behavior earlier when Rephaim had seen her at the House of Night; she had said all those things because she hadn’t wanted Dragon to see him and was trying to protect him. Rephaim told Stevie Rae how Kalona was bound to Neferet since he hadn’t killed Zoey and how both of them were trying to get rid of her control. Suddenly Zoey’s ring tone rang and Stevie Rae answered, only to tell her that she would call her back in a moment. Rephaim told her that Zoey needed to be back in Tulsa in order to distract Neferet and how she was planning to use the red fledglings in her war against the humans.
