as-night-fallsIt is a cold snowy day in the Adirondacks when a couple prisoners escape and make their way toward freedom.  But they stop off at an unsuspecting house to acquire all the things they need for their journey, right as a winter storm comes through prolonging their reign of terror for the family they’ve taken hostage.

This is one of those books that I had never intended on reading, but it showed up in my mail and the synopsis sounded so good that I *had* to read it!  But sadly, it just didn’t live up to my expectations.

First of all I found the story to be very drawn out and just a very slow read.  I really struggled to keep reading it, even going days at a time without touching it, because I just couldn’t convince myself to open it back up!

The characters are about what you would expect, but nothing really stood out about any of them.  I felt no connection to them, and frankly didn’t care what happened to them one way or another.

The story has several flashbacks to one of the felon’s, Nick’s, past and you could see how delusional his mom was raising him.  I can’t imagine any mother being so enamored with one child that they can completely ignore the other one like she did.  Sadly the flashbacks were the most interesting part of the entire story.

I’m sure this book would be a good read for some, but for me it just wasn’t.
