Those who were at Comic Con can say if Ryan Reynolds
and company managed to sell “Green Lantern” to the masses, but for my money, they probably didn’t have to. I’m there with bells on. In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before.

Sam Worthington is attached to star in Dan Dare, a big-budget movie version of the English science-fiction character. Dare was hugely popular in Britain in the 50s, appearing each week in the Eagle comic. Jut-jawed Dare, aided by his tubby sidekick Digby, would fight the evil Mekon week after week in its pages. Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road is producing, with Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) and Colin Frewin executive producing.

Frewin has produced a screen version of Dan Dare before. Back in 2002 he produced a dreadful CGI cartoon that aired on Five and Sony TV distributed internationally. I remember going to the launch party.

Based on the Malibu Comics graphic novel, the film takes place in 1800s Arizona, where a skirmish between cowboys and Apaches is interrupted by the crash landing of a space ship. The alien commander plans to tame the Old West and enslave everyone, but the cowboys and Native Americans turn their six-guns against the alien invaders.

Oh wow, the Green Lantern posters look great! Green Lantern was never a comic book hero I followed, though, so that’s my ‘uneducated in GL mythos’ opinion. 🙂
