Books: A guest Blog by Carol Nicolas

Perhaps my love of books began with my great grandmother, who used to say, “Housework, go hang,” and she’d curl up with a good book.  This was in spite of the fact that she had ten children, lived in rural Manitoba, Canada (which is really cold in the winter), and her husband taught school.  On his meager salary they often didn’t have much to eat, but they all had active imaginations, had fun together, and loved a good story.  Great-Granny wrote down stories about her life and her parents’ lives, which were passed down to me.  Her oldest daughter, who was my grandmother, came out to Alberta, Canada, and stayed with me and my sisters when we were little.  Granny fostered a love of books in me by reading to us and, after she returned home to Ottawa, Ontario, by regularly sending us books.  I still have my first collection of the Narnia Chronicles, The Wind in the Willows, and King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.  Granny sent me her story of her trip around the world.  She also wrote short stories for her first grade classes.  Her youngest sister wrote and published volumes of poetry.  One great aunt used to tell us stories about the mice that lived in the garden and had adventures.   Another great aunt told us stories about our ancestors from Scotland, claiming that we were descendants of Robert the Bruce.  She’d shake her finger at me and say, “Remember Tullymet!”  My mother also loved to read, as well as write poetry and stories.  I still have a huge file of Mum’s poems and stories.  The love of books, the need to express oneself through the written word, and the desire to tell a story has been passed down to me, and I have tried to pass this heritage on to my children.
