YOUNG FANTASY FICTION WRITER SELF-PUBLISHES HIS FIRST BOOK

A discussion about fossils and the supercontinent Pangea in his high school freshman science class triggered Wayne Lackey’s imagination, and he began writing a book of fantasy, myth and science-fiction.”Something in that discussion sparked my imagination and a small idea came to mind and I started to write. I don’t remember the rest of the class because it bored me so I zoned out and just kept writing to kill the time,” recalled Lackey, who graduated from Oroville High School in 2003.

“The Secret of the Hidden Land,” which is available locally through Discount Books on Myers Street and globally through the Atlas Books Web site, is the first in a trilogy. Lackey has already completed the second book, and the third is nearly finished. The young author says he’s working to find an agent and publisher for the series so he can publish all three works.

“I have people in the Netherlands and Turkey who send me e-mails cursing me for putting such a twist in the end of the first book and not yet publishing the second. They have also sent me money to pay for the second book once it’s published,” he said.

I know this was local news, but I wanted to share it because it’s so exciting when people do stuff like this. I know so many people who have always wanted to write a book, but it seems too daunting. But this proves anyone can do it.

Have you ever written or tried to write a book before?
