Review

A few months after the events of Hero Status, we find Valentine and Dave trying to keep their family safe and out of jail. Due to all the laws that Dave broke to find Valentine in the last book, he is now facing charges and may be persecuted. Trying to find a way to save her family, Valentine decides to make a deal with the government, in it she has to help them take down a new drug lord that is selling a new drug that gives psychic powers to normal humans, but has deadly consequences. Hearing that her friend, the prophet-king, is selling the drugs, she accepts, only to find out that the real supplier is somebody close to her family.

Villainous is the second instalment in the White Knight and Black Valentine series, this time we see Valentine is the narrator and we see her take charge of the well-being of her family. I liked that in this book, we see more of her and learn how she thinks. While in the last book, the reader learns bits of her family, in this one we meet her sisters and powers.

I liked Valentine’s family and the interaction that they have among each other. It seems that each person has their own custom, and it’s a very serious thing in this world of heroes and villains. We also see more of Dave and Valentine’s daughter, Elisa, and how she learns to control her new powers. I also liked the people that work with Valentine in her house: Bianca and Eddy. These two characters were very funny and I would like to see more of them and their history in the upcoming books.

In Villainous, it appears we find an answer to the mystery that we have had about Dr. Sweet since the last book, and he still makes problems for both of them.

Another thing that I like about this series, is that there are many superpower uses for both good and bad. The prophet-king and Blaze are characters that I want to learn more about, their past, and normal lives outside the whole justice/crime thing.

The third instalment of the series will be scheduled next year in Almost Invincible, but also author Brand is releasing a free online series Fight Crime, about Dave and Valentine of their early beginnings.

If you like Heroes Status, then I recommend you Villainous by Kristen Brand. This time, a villain has to take the stage to save her family and loved ones from all types of harms.
