User Review: My Soul to Keep by Rachel Vincent

I really enjoyed this book, having not read the previous two books in the series I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise and I will now be going to buy books 1 and 2.

Kaylee is a strong female lead, whom has a hot boyfriend, Nash. Both of whom share a supernatural power and secret.

One of Nash’s friends is acting weird, he is high. Not on a drug as we know it but Demon’s breath. This a highly addictive and the withdrawal is literally hell. It may be too late to save him, but Kaylee’s not so nice cousin’s boyfriend also appears to be addicted to Demon’s breath.

Both Kaylee and Nash are warned of the effects of Demon’s breath but they are unable to fill their friend in, so they take matters into their own hand to try to stop the supply at the source.

What I like most about the book is that it shows the ups and downs of teenage life in reality but through the method of fiction. It shows the risks of drug taking and the horrors of addiction. Peer pressure and friendships. What I found most inspirational about this book was the ending, I don’t want to spoil it but it didn’t end how I would have expected but how I would have wanted. Every teenage girl should read this book, follow Kaylee’s example and keep your beliefs.

Rachel, uses great imagery throughout the book. Her world building comes together nicely and you feel like you are right along there with the characters. My favourite quote “His eyes reflected pain, and regret, and guilt, and horror, swirling as madly now as they’d sat calm moments earlier.”
