Unbreak My Heart

By Nicole Jacquelyn

Brought to you by OBS reviewer Heidi

unbreak-my-heart-nicole-jacquelynKatie had a crush on Shane, her aunt and uncle’s foster child.  They’d even become friends and right when she thought it was going somewhere, he ditched her for her best friend, Rachel.  The two had a fast and furious relationship and got married and started their family.  What could Katie do?  She buried her feelings for Shane for the sake of her friend and became the best aunt to Rachel’s kids that she could be.  Shane’s a military man and is often on deployment.  When he’s gone, Katie practically lives with Rachel, helping her out with the kids.  However, as soon as Shane comes back home, she’s kicked to the curb, no longer needed.

Shane has just come home from another deployment, when Katie gets a call to come to the hospital.  A very pregnant Rachel was in an accident and she didn’t make it.  But thankfully, they were able to save the baby.  Now it’s up to Katie to tell Shane and find a way to piece back what’s left of their lives.

Katie changes her whole life so that she can be there to take care of the kids, all four of them now, while Shane’s at work.  Shane can’t hardly stand her, but they have a good routine down, for the kids.  But like it or not, their lives will forever be changed once again after a drunken night together that leaves Shane racked with guilt and lashing out.

But shortly after, Shane goes off on deployment once again so Katie moves in to take care of the kids by herself during his absence.  But while he’s off on deployment, Katie sees a different side of Shane, a glimpse of the friend she once had before Rachel came into the picture.  He’s even flirting with her via Skype!  However, even that is short-lived when he comes home and jumps to the wrong conclusions and once again lashes out, ripping Katie’s heart out in the process.  He quickly realizes his mistake, but will he ever be able to fix the wrongs he’s caused?

“For the past couple of nights when I’d lain down beside her, after she’d fallen asleep and I knew she couldn’t hear me, I’d promised her that she’d never have to forgive me again if she could do it one last time.”

I didn’t know what I was getting into with this book, by an author that I hadn’t even heard of (not that that’s a new experience for me, mind you), but the synopsis sounded interesting.  And, let me tell you … it did NOT disappoint!   I just found a new favorite author!

You can’t have a better friend than Katie.  She has taken so much crap from Rachel and Shane, but yet she still sticks around helping them, however, she can.  I was glad to see her stick up for herself after all the pain Shane inflicted on her.  It was nice to see the female lead in a romance to actually hold out until the right time when it would have been easy for her to give in to his advances.

“I’d pushed her aside for so long that there was no foundation to build on. Just a mess of shattered pieces that I’d crushed with a sledgehammer every time she’d grown closer than I was comfortable with.”

Shane, Shane, Shane … what can I say about you?  I wanted to like him the entire book, and I actually did, but he was such a douche at times.  He was so quick to get upset with his hair-trigger temper.  But other times he was so darn sweet.  I absolutely loved the way he was with Iris when he was still trying to woo Katie back.  I was glad to see his douchiness go away at the end of the book.

“I couldn’t change the past, but hell if I didn’t want to be what Kate needed now.”

And oh my gosh, I LOVED Katie’s twin brothers … loved them!  In fact, I was wishing that this was a series so we could get to know them better.  And, then I looked and it appears it is a series, although I could not find the name of the series, Change of Heart comes out in September *squee*and I can’t hardly wait!

I’m an emotional reader.  This book had me in tears, which is the sign of a great book in my opinion!   It’s a brilliantly crafted gut-wrenching book that will own you heart and soul!  There is so much I wanted to add to this review, but didn’t because I didn’t want to give too much away in spoilers!!  I even had to leave out some of my favorite quotes so I wouldn’t give too much away.  So if you like a tearjerker book with a compelling story, you should definitely check this book out.  I did NOT want to put it down and I will be waiting anxiously for the next book!

“Sometimes I think I would have always found my way back to you.”
