A late night game of cards turns into something far more intriguing when Edwina Merriweather confesses a secret to one of the most charming and debauched men in London. Contrary to popular opinion, Dina is not in town to find a husband. Instead, she’s resolved to find a rake.

Francis Chevalier is fascinated by the drunken spinster offering up her virginity like a piece of cake. Torn between the need to have her and the desire to protect her from her own stupidity, he politely declines.

Undeterred, Dina returns with a proposition so daring even Chevalier cannot refuse.

Review:

A thoroughly entertaining short story. I was immediately drawn into Edwina’s plight…she just wants to experience things with a man as if she were married. Having recently come in to money, Edwina is no longer in need of securing a husband to live in a suitable manner, but she is looking for a rake. And she found an intriguing one in Chevalier.

The banter between the two prior to commencing their “relationship” was engaging. A couple of chuckle’s emanated from this reader as well. I must say…there is more depth to this rake than I would have expected.  🙂

From this brief glimpse into the writing of Vivienne Westlake, I am intrigued enough that I would like to read a longer title by Ms. Westlake.
