Millie Calloway was recently fired and is looking for work, while living out of her car. She lost her apartment when she lost her income. It’s hard for people like her to find work. People with a criminal record. So, she never expects to get hired by the rich housewife on Long Island that interviewed her to be a live-in maid. However, by some miracle she got the job!
Millie quickly realizes that her new boss, Nina, isn’t quite right. She’s bat shit crazy. She’ll tell her to do something and then yells at her for doing it, saying she never told her to do it in the first place. She loves to ridicule her in front of the other rich wives, and in front of Nina’s handsome husband, Andrew. Nina seems jealous of Millie and that must be why she has to put Millie in her place in front of Andrew. Even if Millie didn’t actually do anything wrong.
Nina is a complete slob, always yelling at Millie and sometimes even Andrew. Somehow, Andrew takes it all in stride and he’s just so nice. He’s a great father to their brat of a daughter too. Millie can’t help, but wonder how Nina got so lucky to get the perfect husband. Sometimes Millie even fantasizes about Andrew, even though she knows it’s wrong.
And, when the opportunity arises for a night out alone with Andrew, Millie jumps at the chance. She knows it’s a bad idea, but she’s never been to a Broadway show and she can’t resist. After drinking too much at dinner, the two end up staying at a hotel … and things get a bit steamy between the two. It can never happen again though, Andrew is married, after all.
However, the two can’t turn their feelings off so quickly. Especially with how terrible Nina treats them both. Andy eventually decides he’s had enough and ends things with Nina, kicking her out of his home. He asks Millie to stay, but he doesn’t want her to be his maid anymore. Things are going great until Millie finds herself locked in the attic …
This book took me a little bit to get into, but once I did, it was a quick read. The story was intriguing. I was able to figure out some things before they happened, but not everything.
The characters were interesting and believable. Nina really was quite the actress in all of this, and Andy played the doting husband well. I’m afraid I can’t get into too many details though, without giving the story away. Millie was stronger than I would have given her credit for though.
I found the story interesting, but it’s not one that makes me rush to read the next book either. However, this isn’t a genre that I read all that often either. Occasionally I really enjoy them though. If you’re bored, it’s a way to entertain yourself for a bit.
