Makayla Rossi just took her infant son, Liam, on a trip to visit her dad in Alaska. They had a great time, but now they’re flying back home to New York. It’s a lengthy flight and can seem even more so with an infant in tow. Her husband, Jack, stayed back in New York working, as usual.
Liam is sound asleep when Makayla needs to use the restroom. All the flight attendants are busy so she asks the girl across the aisle to keep an ear out for him while she uses the bathroom. Horror strikes when she comes back to her seat, to find Liam gone.
The staff searches the entire plane for Liam, but don’t find him. And, when they discover that Makayla’s mom was that famous actress that died after a bout of a strange memory disorder they wonder if Liam was ever on the plane.
The FBI is quickly involved, but what can they really do from the ground? If they can’t find Liam before they land, it may be too late.
I thought this was going to read as a big psychological thriller, but it really didn’t read that way for me. I think a thriller is even a bit strong, if I’m being honest. A slow-paced mystery is probably the most accurate description. If this was a movie, my husband would totally be into it though. Me, not so much.
It was an interesting concept, but it did lack execution for me. I found it to be very repetitive with Makayla getting up to search for her son and fighting with the flight attendants, and being forced to sit back down, eventually. I also found it got too detailed with the flying of the plane. These were mostly details that were unnecessary and made the reading boring.
There were also several points of view; Makayla, Jack, one of the FBI agents, and the co-pilot. There was a lot of suspected infidelity and workaholic spouses in this book as well. It was all too much the same monotonous dialogue. I wanted to like this book, especially since I actually paid for it, but it was mediocre, at best.
