Review:

Every Michael Phillip Cash book I have read reads like a movie or television show. They are always fast reading and very visual. Pokergeist  is now different. I am not a big poker, card or gambling fan so that was a bit different for me. That said, I really enjoyed this quick novel. Also and is usually the case with one of his books, a ghost plays an important part in the storyline. Clutch Henderson was a famous poker player that won everything except the big one. And he came very close to that except for the annoying “Ant” that had some weird inside information. As he sees his dream die, Clutch also dies.

A year later unlucky Telly Martin is trying to see if he has what it takes to go into the poker tournament. He and his girlfriend have decided he should get it out of his system and if he doesn’t he will settle down into a real job. He really is pathetic as a poker player, but he loves it. After a chance encounter, Clutch, the ghost, decided he will make Telly his protégé whether Telly agrees or not. Things start out shaky and Telly has a hard time explaining his actions to his girlfriend. Yet he wins. How can he give it up now?? He has a chance to get in the coveted tournament if only he lets Clutch talk him through it.

Another mainstay in a Michael Phillip Cash book, is the way he intertwines all of his characters in ways that boggle the mind. With surprises, twists and humor, he tells a story that keeps the reader guessing and interested until the very end. For such a short novel, there is a lot of meat in it and the writing is great. This is a fun read that entertains and pulls the reader into an alternative thinking. I would recommend Pokergeist to anyone that enjoys a bit of humor in your ghost story, enjoys poker and gambling and anyone that wants a fun, quick read. It would make a great movie of course. I think the fact that the author also writes screenplays bleeds into his novel writing and the way they read. I enjoy it.
