I love Ruta Sepetys- her writing is phenomenal and superb. I’m a sucker for anything that she writes, so that’s why I felt I had to do a playlist. Sometimes reviews just aren’t enough.

  • Nobody’s Home by Avril Lavigne

This is a song for Josie’s mother and many of the girls at the brothel. They’re all “lost inside” and struggling to find themselves. In fact, this song is also for Josie. She has an inkling of who she is, but it isn’t very clear.

 

  • Firework by Katy Perry

Even though Out of the Easy is dark and gorgeous, it still has a bubbly and happy feel to it. For some reason I can’t explain, I know St. Peter will call my name,  Firework seems to fit with this book.

 

  • The A Team by Ed Sheeran

This is the song that totally describes the brothel and Josie’s mother and what Josie is going through. I’ve always admired this song, but I love the ability for this song to relate to Out of the Easy (or the other way around?).

 

  • Moments by One Direction

Josie has some of the most caring people supporting her. Moments is a song about dedication- dedication also reminiscent in Out of the Easy.

 

  • Arms by Christina Perri

You know that light, bubbly feel I said Out of the Easy gave me? It’s also in this song called Arms. I’m a huge Christina Perri fan, and I especially love this song.

 

  • The Moment I Knew by Taylor Swift

That was the moment I knew- that my mom has issues, that I want to learn, that there’s this seriously cute guy I kind of like. (That’s from Josie’s point of view). The feel of The Moment I Knew is tragic and intense, like some parts of this book.

 

  • Hothouse by 78violet

78violet is the grown up name for Aly and AJ. Remember them? Well, they’ve got this new song, and it’s freaky good. Plus, it so goes with Out of the Easy, especially the seven minute long music video they produced themselves!
