Summary

The next day Dorian refuses to leave his house. He is tormented by the vision of James Vane watching him through the conservatory window. He fears if he leaves his house he will fall into the hands of James Vane. He starts to wonder though if he had just imagined James at the window the night before. If he had truly gone to Dorian’s house than someone would have seen him: the gardener who would have noticed a set of footprints or the keepers or the various servants. He starts to believe seeing James was a figment was nothing more than his imagination and his nerves, he truly believes James had left on the ship to India and his youthful face had saved him, there is no way James knows his true identity. But Dorian fears he will not get any sleep neither during the day or night, because the imaginary vision of seeing James will haunt him. He begins to fear the terror of the horrible act he committed upon killing his friend will never leave him, he will have to live within the terror and it will suffocate him. Lord Henry comes over at six o’clock and finds Dorian weeping.

Favorite Quotes:

“Actual life was chaos, but there was something terribly logical
in the imagination. It was the imagination that set remorse
to dog the feet of sin. It was the imagination that made
each crime bear its misshapen brood. In the common world
of fact the wicked were not punished, nor the good rewarded.
Success was given to the strong, failure thrust upon the weak.” ~Dorian

“I have no terror of death. It is the coming of death that terrifies me.
Its monstrous wings seem to wheel in the leaden air around me.” ~Dorian

“Knowledge would be fatal. It is the uncertainty
that charms one. A mist makes things wonderful.” ~Lord Henry
