Chapter 14 – Declarations

Chapter 15 – Wager

Summary

Bella unsuccessfully tries to convince Alice that the graduation party is a bad idea. Edward lets Bella know that Carlisle and Jasper are trying to track down some old friends to deal with the newborn army threat and Jasper is considering talking to his maker, Maria. They are really trying to do whatever it takes to avoid a visit from the Volturi, despite the fact that most of these friends are not “vegetarians”. Edward tells Bella that they will be going to Seattle in a week and she tries to convince him to go ahead and change her, citing that 8 would be better than 7 to improve their chances. Edward refuses and Alice explains to her that she wouldn’t be helpful because she wouldn’t be good in a fight and Edward would get hurt trying to protect her. Alice has a vision of a cancellation for the party – something has happened to Phil and Renee won’t be coming. Alice tells Bella that she’ll have a message when she gets home. After taking her home, Edward tells Bella that he, Carlisle, Esme, and Rosalie are going hunting for a few hours and the others will keep her safe. Bella suggests going to visit La Push to avoid being babysat and Edward concedes that she’s right about being safe there. They discuss how human blood makes vampires stronger and the Cullens will be hunting more frequently to increase their strength to fight the newborns. Edward tells Bella that she will be stronger than Emmett for a while after she’s changed and tells her to challenge him to an arm-wrestling match. Edward drives Bella to La Push the following day, dropping her off at the treaty line. They head over to Jacob’s house to hang out for a while and plan to ride their bikes later. Jacob asks her about her plans for the next week and graduation, hinting for information about her upcoming change. She tells him that she has no special plans for the next week and talks about the party Alice is throwing. Jacob teases her about not being invited and she invites him. Jacob falls asleep and Bella watches TV. She thought about the conversations she’d had with Edward about him refusing to change her because she’s scared and she concludes that Edward is right – she’s not ready yet. She decides that she doesn’t want to be practical and she wants Edward to be the one to change her – wanting him to want her enough to do it. She tries to imagine telling everyone that she would be getting married and just couldn’t do it. She has the vision of her with Edward on a porch swing in clothes from another time again. Jacob eventually wakes up and they go for a walk outside. Jacob tells Bella that he’s in love with her and he wants her to pick him.

Quotes

“You’re only going to graduate from high school – for the first time – once. You don’t get to be human again, Bella. This is a once-in-a-lifetime shot.” – Alice, page 311

“I’m in love with you, Bella,” Jacob said in a strong, sure voice. “Bella, I love you. And I want you to pick me instead of him. I know you don’t feel that way, but I need the truth out there so that you know your options. I wouldn’t want a miscommunication to stand in your way.” – Jacob, page 327

“Until your heart stops beating, Bella,” he said. “I’ll be here – fighting. Don’t forget that you have options.” – Jacob, page 330

“No, dammit! You broke my hand!” – Bella

“Bella, you broke your hand. Now stop dancing around and let me look at it.” – Jacob, page 331

“I hate you, Jacob Black.” – Bella

“That’s good. Hate is a passionate emotion.” – Jacob, page 332

“… if you ever bring her back damaged again – and I don’t care whose fault it is; I don’t care if she merely trips, or if a meteor falls out of the sky and hits her in the head – if you return her to me in less than the perfect condition that I left her in, you will be running with three legs. Do you understand that, mongrel?” – Edward, page 340

“Fall down again, Bella?” – Emmett

“No, Emmett. I punched a werewolf in the face.” – Bella, page 342
