These days vampires are everywhere. Now there is some kind of a living dead in culture and drained blood everywhere you look. Not that I don’t like that – I’m a big fan of vampires and all other supernatural beings. For years!
Anyway – it’s nearly impossible not to jump the supernatural-band-wagon at the moment. Not if you are a broadcasting company. Not if you are in entertainment business. So after Summits ‘Twilight’ and HBOs ‘True Blood’ now we have also CWs ‘Vampire Diaries’. All adaptions from books. Books I read long before they even thought about making movies/series of it.
Perhaps for some people, which just watch the movie/series, it’s becoming too much. And it’s hard to decide what is good or not so good. That’s why I want to compare this three popular adaptions split up in details.

Leading Actress
‘Twilight’: Bella Swan – 17 years old. A clumsy high school student who is attracted by Edward Cullen at first sight.
‘True Blood’: Sookie Stackhouse – 25 years old. A waitress with psychic abilities – she can read minds – who wants to meet a vampire for years.
‘Vampire Diaries’: Elena Gilbert – 17 years old. A gorgeous high school girl who gets all she wants to have.

WINNER: Sookie.
She is strong-minded and can defend herself in most situations. Sometimes she is doing moronic choices but she is open minded, pretty and adorable.

Living Situation
‘Twilight’: Bella is living with her dad – Charlie, the police-chef – in Forks. Her mother, René, lives with her 2nd husband in Jacksonville. She has few friends at school – Mike, Angela, Eric and Jessica.
‘True Blood’: Sookie is living with her grandmother in Bon Tempes. Her parents died during a flesh-flood when she was seven. Sookies brother Jason is living in their parents house. Sookie has few friends – Sam, her boss and Tara.
‘Vampire Diaries’: Elena is living in her parents house together with aunt Judith and her sister Margaret in Fell’s Church. Her parents died few years ago in a car-crash. Her verybest friends are Bonnie, Meredith and her ex-boyfriend Matt.

WINNER: Bella.
She just moved to live with her dad and now has to handl so much – the cloudy weather, new people, her dad … and she is doing great.

Family
‘Twilight’: The Cullens. Carlisle, Esme, Edward, Rosalie, Emmett, Alice and Jasper. All for one and one for all.
‘True Blood’: The Stackhouses. Sookie, Jason and Adele. Sticking together because there is nobody else left of their family.
‘Vampire Diaries’: Stefan and Damon Salvatore. Brothers who hate each other, but also care about each other.

WINNER: The Cullens.
A Family that respects each other and that acts like one in so much situations – sounds just perfect.

Vampire Boyfriend
‘Twilight’: Edward Cullen is a gorgeous high school student with a big family. He is torn because he thinks he has no soul but he cares so much about Bella.
‘True Blood’: Bill Compton is a veteran of Civil War. He is straight thinking and lives next to Sookie.
‘Vampire Diaries’: Stefan Salvatore was born in Italy during the Renaissance. He and his brother Damon were both in love with their maker: Cathrine.

WINNER: Edward.
He is more caring and has less baggage to carry than the other two.
And it seems he is able to love much deeper from the beginning.

Shape Shifters
‘Twilight’: Jacob Black. Quileute boy who can become a werewolf and is in love with Bella.
‘True Blood’: Sam Merlotte. Bar owner and Sookies boss who can turn in any animal he wants – mostly a Collie.
‘Vampire Diaries’: Damon Salvatore. He is Stefans brother, also a vampire and can turn into a crow.

WINNER: Jacob.
The sweet and cute native american boy only changes his form to protect his family and friends – especially Bella, which he adores.

Love
‘Twilight’: Bella and Edward. Attracted to each other, like soulmates. They want to stay together for eternity.
‘True Bood’: Sookie and Bill. Bill saved Sookies life by giving her blood. Than hot and wonderful love. Later it becomes different.
‘Vampire Diaries’: Elena and Stefan. Love at first sight and it seems to be forever, but Elena is also attracted to Damon.

WINNER: Bella and Edward.
The kind of love every girl wants to find.

Vampires
‘Twilight’: There are ‘normal’ vampires and ‘vegetarians, which only live by animal-blood; They all are somehow ruled by the Volturi; Their natural enemys are werewolves; They don’t need to sleep – never; They can’t go out in bright sunlight when ‘normal’ people are around because they sparkle; They are superstrong, superfast and a lot of have special abilities.
‘True Blood’: Traditional here the vampires sleep by day because the sun hurts/kill them; They don’t need to drink from humens because there is the synthetic ‘True Blood’; They have their own command structure and each country has it’s own king or queen.
‘Vampire Diaries’: The vampires can go out in the sun when wearing any kind of jewlery including a lapis; They don’t need human-blood but it makes them stronger.

WINNER: Twilight AND True Blood.
Twilight because it’s pretty cool to live like and next to normal people and never to sleep –
True Blood because it’s awesome never to need human- or animal-blood.

Book vs. Film
‘Twilight’: It’s sometimes very different and a lot of is missing or cut too short in the movie. Let’s hope part two will be more book-loyal.
‘True Blood’: It’s completely different (only the story-line fits) and there are a lot of changes. But the changes are great and so it’s still great and wonderful.
‘Vampire Diaries’: It looks like very loyal to the book. Let’s see how this is going on, because it has to be stretched to become a weekly series.

WINNER: No winner – no looser.
Book is book and movie is movie. I think we have to see each on his own.
Than we can love all – book and movie. And we are not sad because of the changings.

Casting
‘Twilight’: The most characters are not like described – BUT all of them are perfect! Since watching the movie I can’t imagine any other person than the actual actors. They feel to me like a real family.
‘True Blood’: A few are very well casted (talking about Eric) and others are completely changed (like Tara) – BUT all in all did Alan Ball superb choices and the series is that famous because of the actors.
‘Vampire Diaries’: Very well casted and stuck close to the books. Seems like they are great actors and they bring the story and the persons to life.

WINNER: Twilight.
Because there the whole cast is perfect. Not one I want to pic that is just okay –
they are all wonderful and great!

Okay, I’m done. Maybe you see I’m mostly drawn to ‘Twilight’ close followed by ‘True Blood’ – which is more mature than the other two – but I really tried to compare all fair.
