Summary:
When the Village Blend opens a Writer’s Block Lounge, a cold case crime turns up the heat on Clare and her crew in this gripping new entry in the beloved Coffeehouse Mystery series from New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle.
As much as master roaster Clare Cosi adores coffee, the landmark shop she manages won’t survive if she doesn’t sell enough of it. So when the Village Blend’s customer traffic grinds to a halt, she turns to her staff for creative ideas, and the Writer’s Block Lounge is born.
Madame, the eccentric octogenarian owner of the shop, is upset by this news. Years ago, a group of accomplished writers used the shop’s second-floor lounge to inspire each other, but the group disbanded when something dark occurred. Though that history is shrouded in mystery, Clare presses forward…
Soon the Village Blend tables are filled with aspiring novelists, playwrights, and poets, all happy to be coaxed, cajoled, and caffeinated by her coffeehouse crew. Clare admires the stamina of these scribes, many of them toiling at night jobs—driving taxis, tending bar, ushering for Broadway—while penning projects during the day.
Then one of their fictions turns fatal when a shocking secret leads to a deadly end. Unless Clare can untangle this mystery, uncover the truth, and stop a desperate killer, she fears more of these weary writers may be marked for eternal rest. (Goodreads)
Review:
The Coffeehouse Mystery series by Cleo Coyle is definitely going strong, even at book #21! No Roast for the Weary is an engaging cozy mystery which kept this reader consuming the book in record time. While I have not read the entire series in order, in fact, until this book in the series, I have only read the first four books. This was definitely not a hindrance to my enjoyment of this edition 🙂
Village Blend is struggling, and master roaster Clare Cosi must come up (along with input from her staff) some ideas to assist with making the Village Blend the go to coffee destination. So, the Village Blend opens a Writer’s Block Lounge in its upstairs area. But this bring’s up some unpleasant memories for the eccentric octogenarian owner of the shop. And when secrets are exposed from the past and a murder occurs, Clare must get to the truth before it becomes fatal for the coffee shop!
In true Clare style, she gets right down to solving the mysteries that come into her purview. The characters in the story are like old friends, making the story flow effortlessly.
One aspect I enjoyed was that the reader got some history about the Village Blend and Madame. I also really like the characters Esther and of course, Mr. Scrib. Mr. Scrib is an older writer and remembers the time when there was previously a writer’s group at the coffee shop.
Figuring out whodunit happened, but it took until the end (the way I like my cozy mystery books) … so a fulfilling read.
Naturally, I will not provide any details as each reader should enjoy the journey themselves 🙂
If you have previously enjoyed this series, or not, you will enjoy this new addition to the Coffee House Mystery series by Cleo Coyle. Sin my humble opinion, the reader will get sufficient backstory to enjoy this book #21 in the series.
