Did you love Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland? How about the Broadway musical Wicked? What would happen if you mixed the two together? Alice scribe Linda Woolverton penning a Sleeping Beauty tale from the perspective of evil fairy Maleficent, perhaps?
We reported back in January that Tim Burton might direct said film, but it was not until today that news has surfaced that Disney has optioned the script with the intention of making a live-action adaptation with a fresh twist on the classic tale.
Still, we ask: is it really a fresh idea or just another Hollywood trend? Two films underpinned with a similar concept are heading our way in 2011 and 2012. We’ve been urged to find a soft spot in our hearts for vampires (Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries) and werewolves (Twilight* again, The Wolfman) and now it’s time to rehabilitate the witches. 2012 will see the big-screen adaptation of the book turned musical Wicked: it’s The Wizard of Oz seen through the eyes of Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west – and in the telling, we find out she’s not so wicked after all. Next year will see another cinematic Wicked, which takes a Vampire Diaries-style approach to the story of a normal girl who discovers she is the descendent of a powerful line of witches. After being orphaned, Holly is sent to live with family in Seattle where she finds herself in the middle of a witchy family feud.
