MOVIE NEWS FEB 8TH PART TWO WEREWOLF, JOHAN HEX, GHOSTBUSTERS 3 & THE THING

The return of the werewolf

Fur is fashionable again. While vampires dominated last year, it is now the turn of the werewolf. And not just at full moon. Publishers are capitalising on the growing interest, with some, including Mills & Boon, launching new imprints. BBC’s Being Human is enjoying a second series due to the popularity of its lycanthrope, George, and the genre has received a Hollywood boost as The Wolfman, a remake of the 1941 horror classic, opens this Friday.

Bob Powers, co-author of The Werewolf’s Guide to Life: A Manual for the Newly Bitten, thinks the beasts’ current popularity may be because “they reflect a lot of the same struggle people are going through during this recession”. Maybe, Bob. But what are their key characteristics?

How old are werewolf legends?

There is much disagreement within academic circles. In Gaius Petronius’s Latin text Satyricon, usually dated around AD60, dinner guest Niceros tells how a travelling companion stripped off, urinated on his clothes and turned into a werewolf while they were in a cemetery. Andrew Laird, Professor of Classical Literature at Warwick University, said use of werewolves as dinner conversation would suggest such tales may date back even further.

Do The Jonah Hex Reshoots Mean A Bigger Role For Megan Fox?

The latest crop of Hex set pics show Josh Brolin and Megan Fox in their fantastic Western attire standing under a Tim Burton-meets-Tombstone umbrella. Fox has previously mentioned that her role was “basically a cameo” but her presence in these reshoot images seem to imply otherwise.

“I’ll come back in Ghostbusters III only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.”

Star Wars’ Owen, Grindhouse girl in The Thing

We’ve got great casting news for that upcoming prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing: Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Grindhouse, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) and Joel Edgerton (Uncle Owen in Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith) will star.

That’s the news from The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog:
Winstead will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

Wow, I had no idea that werewolf legends were that old. Did you?

What do you think of Megan Fox’s cameo in Jonah Hex being expanded? I’m not too fond of her as an actress, but I know the guys love to see her – less as much clothing as possible.

LOL@Venkman being a ghost in the 3rd one. What do you think of that?

The Thing sounds interesting, do you think it will be good?
