How Tim Burton hopes to do justice to Alice in Wonderland

scifiwire.com

Syfy is sponsoring a retrospective on the career of Tim Burton at New York’s Museum of Modern Art—and we sat down with him as the exhibit opened for an exclusive chat. Find out where he gets his inspiration for his unusual characters, what sci-fi directors influenced him when he was starting out, what sci-fi movies he believes are essential to watch (think B-, C- and even Z-grade films) and how things are going with the upcoming feature film Alice in Wonderland.

Watch 2.5 Minutes of Avatar: The Thanador Chase

20th Century Fox has released a new video clip from James Cameron’s Avatar on the Fox-owned site IGN. The clip features Sam Worthington’s character Jake Sully in Avatar form, trying to escape from a Thanador, one of the violent creatures of Pandora. You might remember that a 30 second segment of this clip was released through LG, and previously ran on the site. The new clip is two and a half minutes long, and goes beyond the end point showed at Comic-Con and Avatar Day. Watch it now embedded after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

What’s next after New Moon’s vamps? Maybe … Beastly?

Vampires and werewolves may be hot this year, as New Moon’s weekend take proved, but what will be hot next year? CBS Films hopes it will be beasts, as in Beastly, as in a modern-day take on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.

Beastly, adapted from the novel of the same name, stars Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens and Neil Patrick Harris, the last of whom unfortunately can’t be seen in the just-released teaser trailer.

Movie review: Dahl fantasy clever as a fox

“Fantastic Mr. Fox” is a proudly analog animated entertainment, making its handmade way into a marketplace glutted with digital goodies. Next to the three-dimensional, computer-generated creatures that swoop and soar off the screen these days, the furry talking animals on display here, with their matted pelts, jerky movements and porcelain eyes, might look a little quaint, like old-fashioned wind-up toys uneasily sharing the shelf with the latest video game platforms.

Joshua Jackson Sticking With the Supernatural, Starring in Adaptation of British TV Series UFO

It took me a while to get used to seeing Dawson Creek star Joshua Jackson in Fringe, but like the series itself, Jackson eventually found a groove that I enjoyed revisiting. Now it seems he’s sticking with the supernatural themes from Fringe with his next project. Jackson has signed on for the lead in UFO, an adaptation of the cult-hit British TV series.

Jackson will be playing the of Paul Foster, which Variety describes (along with the plot) as “a test pilot who joins S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert org built under a Hollywood studio that defends Earth against a race of aliens who have been abducting humans and using the body parts.” I haven’t heard much about this series, but I could definitely see the premise working for a decent B-level sci-fi romp.
