If you didn’t yell out loud at the television while watching The Vampire Diaries shockers last night, then I don’t know what would. True to the hype, the show did not let us down in the cliffhanger department.
Let’s take a look at the most shocking moments of the season finale:
MAYOR RICHARD LOCKWOOD FALLING AT THE SOUND FROM THE DEVICE AND HIS ULTIMATE DEATH
When the sound device was turned on once the fireworks started at the Founders Day celebration and all the vamps were rendered incapacitated, falling to the ground from the high pitch sound, Mayor Lockwood was seen on his knees along with them. Didn’t you think he was a vampire too? Ok, so if you read the books, you probably know more than I, but it was either he was a vampire or faking it to blend in. This would be stupid, of course, but who knows to what lengths the Mayor would go to.
When Jonathan sees Damon amongst the other vamps in the basement, it was only fitting another vamp would break the Mayor’s neck. Damon’s secret would not come out to the other council members and would remain safe. PHEW.
ANNA GETS STAKED AND DIES TOO
Poor Anna. At first I thought her character was pain in the ass and just like the other tomb vamps, out for revenge. But soon she grew on me and she truly cared for Jeremy and I started to really like her. Then, she gets pulled from Jeremy hands and thrown in the basement. Squish!, stake through the heart by the hands of John Gilbert, as Damon watches helplessly, due to vervain flowing through his veins. Jeremy loses another love of his life, but not before Anna gives him some of her own blood in case he wants to turn. We’ll get to that in a moment.
TYLER AFFECTED BY THE SOUND DEVICE CRASHES HIS FATHER CAR AND WE REALIZE HE IS DIFFERENT TOO
When Mayor Lockwood tells his son, along with Caroline and Matt to leave and go home (so they would not be involved nor close to the action in Operation Vamp Take Down), the Mayor hands the keys to his car over to Tyler. After the sound device goes off, Tyler is affected and loses control of the car, crashing it. After paramendics arrive on the scene and check his eyes, we see they are yellow. Fi Fi Fo Fum, do I smell a wolf? Yes.
DAMON KISSES ELENA AND SHE KISSES HIM BACK
After Elena returns home from the Vamp Take Down fiasco, she walks up to her door and is met by Damon who seems changed. More compassionate. That in itself is shocking. They have a tender friendship moment on her front porch, when Damon leans in and kisses her. WHAT!!! Elena just had a whole conversation with Stefan about how she loves HIM. How could she so easily kiss him back? Even Damon was perplexed. Happy I’m sure. But also perplexed as hell. How this will effect his relationship with his brother and Elena…only time will tell.
JEREMY DECIDES TO BECOME ONE OF THE UNDEAD
Jeremy, having learned of Anna’s demise after a visit from a compassionate Damon, feels even more alone and empty inside that ever. He takes the vial of blood Anna had given him earlier and decides he’s rather become a vampire to be able to shut off the pain he feels. If he drinks Anna’s blood and dies, he will rise vampire.
Jeremy shuts himself in the bathroom and downs the blood, followed by a whole bottle of Elena’s prescription pills. The last we see is Jeremy lying in bed waiting to fall asleep…forever.
ELENA KILLS HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER JOHN, OR DOES SHE?
This is the shouting out loud at the TV moment. This is why the kiss between Elena and Damon makes a whole lotta sense. The perfect twist to end the season.
After the front porch kiss, Elena comes inside after her settling in and heads to the kitchen to find (biological Dad) John. He tries to explain why he wanted to kill all the vamps (retribution for Isobel turning into one) and Elena takes this in kind and quite calmly. They are both positioned at the center kitchen island when Elena’s eyes pan to his hand and his protective ring, when all of a sudden Elena grabs a kitchen knife, hacks off his fingers and pushes him against the refrigerator. In his last breathe he says “Katherine?” and she plunges the knife into his chest.
THE RETURN OF KATHERINE
We all catch our breathe at this revelation, when the real Elena is seen walking up her front steps talking to Stefan about how someone stole her things. She will check on Jeremy and then visit Caroline in the hospital, or so she thinks.
Upon entering the house she calls out to Jeremy when she hears noises in the kitchen…the last scene is her walking to the kitchen…to face…Katherine. This shocking moment is really on the verge of happening and we have to wait until next season to find out what kind of showdown will take place.
