lay-it-down-desert-dogs-cara-mckennaVince Grossier is familiar with being on the wrong side of the law.  He has done his time and walks the straight and narrow, well, for the most part. One night Vince receives a phone call from a childhood friend (Alex) that sets Vince and the remaining Desert Dog buddies into a new direction.  Deputy sheriff Alex has witnessed something that has him conflicted. Alex wants to meet Vince to talk about what he witnessed, but he never shows.

In the days flowing Alex’s death, in walks Vince’s fate to the local watering hole. It just happens that fate looks a lot like a cute, educated, blonde photographer wearing glasses and sporting a “don’t tell me what I should be feeling/doing” attitude.  The blonde’s name is Kim Paget, and she is exactly what Vince never knew he needed. The hero and the heroine are like oil and water, they shouldn’t mix.  However, put them with the right recipe and you got tasty vinaigrette.

What I both like and hate about this book is that it is a virtual smorgasbord of genres.  It can be classified as a contemporary romance and a light mystery. It is actually easier to make a list of the ingredients than to try to describe it; it is a pinch of this and a dash of that. It really does read like a recipe:

  •   Mystery
  • Motorcycles
  • Erotica
  • Bad boys with tattoos
  • A hot cowboy
  • Mysterious man with English accent
  • Tough local girl that owns the bar
  • Good girl next door
  • Hint of the paranormal

This book is like cheating on your diet: you know you shouldn’t be eating something so full of calories. You think you can take just a bite, but then you eat the whole thing. This book almost suffers from too much, but somehow the author pulls all the crazy deliciousness together.  After reading it you can’t wait for the next serving, even though your brain is stuffed full of characters and all the possibilities.

Since I feel a love/hate relationship with the book, I would love to give it 5 stars, but hate that it is really a 4 star book.  Sometimes too much just gives you a tummy ache.
