examiner.com: First introduction to an author’s work can have a lasting effect. For many readers, it was the magical world of The Spiderwick Chronicles that gave them a first taste of Holly Black and her love of faeries and good triumphing over evil. A five book series, released in 2003 and 2004, Black teamed up with long-time friend Tony DiTerlizzi  to pair his intricate and fanciful illustrations with her stories. The Field Guide and The Seeing Stone were released consecutively followed by Lucinda’s Secret, The Ironwood Tree and The Wrath of Mulgrath which made it to #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list.

The story tells the tale of the Grace kids, twins Jared and Simon and their sister Mallory who move into their great-aunt Lucinda’s decrepit house following their parents’ separation. By chance, Jared Grace discovers Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You, which is protected by a house-brownie named Thimbletack. The siblings fight goblins sent to retrieve the book for the evil ogre, Mulgarath.
