It was pretty dark this far from the lot, but I could make out two figures standing by the road. The taller one was holding something above it’s head. It was Mack, and he wasn’t moving. Definitely the stupidest thing, I thought. But what made me gasp and step out into the road wasn’t the fear, or Mack’s almost lifeless body, or the heap on the ground that was probably Denise.

I couldn’t hear them. I could see them, but that was it. These were the voids I’d sensed before. “Jesus, Shepherd of Judea,” I whispered, taking a step closer.

The two turned towards me. I noticed for the first time that their faces, their skin actually, faintly glowed, and I knew it wasn’t from the distant parking lot lights. The taller one dropped Mack, and the other knelt down. I could make out another glowing figure, being lifted from the ground.

“Sookie!” Sam was calling me from the bar. I couldn’t take my eyes off the figures who had possibly just killed the Rattrays. The tall one was quickly moving towards me. I could feel that sensation I had earlier in the bar and again realized that there was nothing coming from his head. I could see now that it was a man, a tall, beautiful man. And he was smirking at me. He stopped in front of me and hissed something to the two behind him. He intently stared down at me with blue eyes much bluer than my own. I felt that picking sensation again in my head.

“What are you doing? Are you doing that? And why can’t I hear you?” I should rationally be scared, running away, terrified, screaming. Instead I stepped closer, peering up at him. What was he?

“It is because I have not spoken that you cannot hear me.” He smiled and slowly leaned in closer. Was he smelling me? “Who are you? What are you?” Hey, those were my questions! He gently tilted my face up with a cool finger, but all I felt was heat right through my center and down to my toes. I fought the overwhelming urge to pop that cool finger right into my mouth. What was going on with me? He smiled. Could he tell what my body was up to? Uh oh. And had he picked up on my slip about not being able to ‘hear’ him?

“My name is Sookie Stackhouse. I’m just a waitress here at the bar.” My voice was nowhere as smooth as his. “And whatever you’re trying to do, it’s not working.” The picking in my brain stopped. “Thanks.”

“You are welcome, Miss Stackhouse. And you are also, I believe, more that ‘just a waitress.'” He moved his whole body closer, putting his hands on my shoulders. He lowered his face to mine and gently kissed my on the cheek. My knees were about to buckle when he straightened up. “We will have to meet again, and soon, I hope.
