Summary

It’s hard to know how long you’ve lived when you can’t remember how many times you’ve died.

Some yearn for immortality, but seventeen-year-old Jordan Smith regards it a curse she can’t escape. As an Elemental, Jordan possesses the power to endure painful, fiery deaths that transport her to another place in history. Yet her power comes at a terrible cost. She fears the combined strength of the four Elementals will threaten the fate of humanity. And she vows to prevent this from happening…even if it means she will die.

Flung into the present, the immense force of the other Elementals again draws near. Now Jordan must choose to sacrifice her feelings for the guy she loves—or risk losing everyone she knows.

Review

Elemental tells the story of Jordan, one of the four beings that represents the four elements, who the Greeks used to call her Pry, fire. After a long run over the world and time, we finally see her in the present time, where two friends find her after her last jump. But instead of running, this time, she has to stay put in the Bay Area, as she has to wear a pink cast for the next six weeks. Life can’t get any better for Jordan.

When you are an elemental being, that can control fire, and is running from the other three, it is not in your top priorities to go to school – I can see why she would have preferred to face her persecutors instead of facing today’s high school. I liked how for a moment Jordan contemplated the idea of going to the cost, knowing that it would attract the other elementals instead of going to her first day at school.

Author Debbie Kump, has made a world where these beings can jump through time and space, and the scene where Jordan learns about the history of the world was priceless. I imagine that the way it was described, is how a person that has come out of a coma must feel like. It was one of my favorite scenes of the book, but most of all, it remind me of a scene of the movie the Fifth Element. I like stories about the elements, and finding something similar in these two different cases, makes it more interesting.

This is the first book of the Elemental Series, and I feel that its purpose was for setting the background for the rest series. It has the capacity of being a standalone book, but it has some loose ends when finished.

One of the things that caught my attention was the cover, I think it emphasizes with Jordan’s element of fire, so kudos to the artist that made the cover.

If you like stories about the elements or people who willed them, then I recommend Elemental by Debbie Kump. Here you will meet a girl who has been running for a long time just to keep the world and humanity safe.
