Jane gets assigned to help the D.A’s office for the next few weeks. She joins in on a case she had worked many years ago when she had been apart of the D.A. A girl named Elena Estrada had been abducted from a bus station and found murdered by a machete in the desert. But Jane who is now Deb, has no memory of what made her leave the D.A. after only two years when a lawyer is usually supposed to serve for three. Jane discovers she use to date Alan, the lawyer she is working with on the case. Alan sneaks a kiss, completely surprising Jane, but they both agree to drop it and focus on the case. Alan thinks they may have found their suspect, a friend of Elena’s she use to consider as an uncle, but his alibi stands up because Jane notices the scarf Elena had been sewing for her friend was already well under way which means she made another stop during the night. Someone else had to have killed her.
Alan questions Jane as to why she had left both the D.A. and him. She had said it was for personal reasons but had never really explained what those reasons were. Jane just responds that part of her life was a big blur. Alan drops the subject and asks if she wants to go to dinner. Alan offers Jane a job as a full time prosecutor.
As Jane is trying to figure out whether or not to accept the offer, Terri finds information about a witness named Patricia Martin who had been about to help solve the case but for some reason she was never indicted or her testimony written. Jane meets up with Patricia Martin in the park and Patricia tells Jane she had gone to an AA meeting where one of the men there had stood up and told them about a dream he had about killing a girl. The details to the dream where so close to the real case Patricia saw on TV about Elena that she called the D.A.’s office. Jane asks if Patricia remembered the man’s name and Patricia reveals the name of the same friend Elena had gone to check up on the night of her death. Jane asks why Patricia had never met with Alan when they had set up a meeting eight years before. Patricia doesn’t understand what she means, she had met with Alan and had told him everything she had disclosed to Jane.
Jane finds out the man Patricia was talking about, Nate, is the son of a very rich man. She thinks that’s why Alan had lied about getting Patricia’s statement and pretended they had no leads. He was too afraid to go against Nate. Jane manages to get a confession from Nate but notices something odd. As Nate is signing the confession Jane notices he is signing with his right hand but whoever killed Elena did so with his left hand. Nate isn’t the killer so why is he taking the fall? Nate was too drunk to really remember what happened and he always said he remembered Elena’s death like a dream. Jane realizes Nate’s father is left handed and he was the one who killed Elena because she refused to sleep with him.
Kim takes on a case about a fourteen year old girl who racked up over fourteen thousand dollars on her mother’s credit cards and her mother believes she was brainwashed by a blogging site. In an odd twist of fate, the blogging site turns out to belong to Stacy! Turns out Stacy is sent a box full of pricy and luxury items every week from a company called Pacific Holding Corps and blogs about the items through video. But per the FCC regulations the company is off the hook and is covered under immunity. The blogger though is liable for failing to disclose material connections. Since Jane can’t represent Stacy because she is working on a case with the D.A., Jane asks Grayson to step in. Stacy promises for now to always tell the truth about the items she gets (she doesn’t always like what she gets but praises everything since she gets it from the company) and Grayson will have Pacific Holding return the amount for the purchased items. Kim’s client agrees to their terms.
Stacy does as she promises and begins giving her real thoughts to some of the items she receives from Pacific Holding, except now the CEO of the company is none to happy about the video blogs. The CEO wants the blog to be taken down but Stacy refuses and tells the CEO if she doesn’t like the blog she can just sue her. The CEO and Stacy go to court. Stacy gets ordered to take down her blog but soon her fans are petitioning for her return and returning Pacific Holding items until they allow Stacy to post her video blogs back up. The CEO meets again with Stacy and agrees to let her have her video blog back up.
Parker is still following Kim around secretly and discovers she is seeing someone new. Parker gets caught by Fred sneaking around Kim’s office trying to dig up who she is seeing. He assigns Fred the task of finding out all the information on Kim’s new beau and gives him one day to report back to him. Fred is able to get out of it under the excuse that it violates the assistant to boss oath of holding a boss’s secrets. But since Terri works for Jane not Kim, she is more than happy to snoop on Kim and try to figure out who she is seeing. Terri discovers the man Kim is seeing has been married for the past six years. Parker confronts Kim with the information but Kim tells him she already knew and tells Parker to stay out of her personal life. Later on, Kim confronts Andrew, the man she was seeing, and pours his hot brewing coffee on him for never telling her he was married. She threatens to call his wife if she ever hears from him again.
Alan shows up at Jane’s job and still confesses to have feelings for her. But Jane wants nothing to do with him. He has made his career looking the other way and she tells him to hand in his resignation by the next day or she will make sure everyone knows what he did. She heads to Elena’s mom’s house to inform her that they caught the killer than heads to meet up with Stacy at a restaurant to celebrate. Parker and Grayson show up because they are having a boy’s night and plan on getting drunk since Parker has decided to finally move on from Kim and Grayson from Vanessa. Jane and Stacy make a toast to possibilities.
My Thoughts: I really liked this episode. Jane finally took on a case where it felt realistic and didn’t get solved in two seconds. I like the twist of Alan having attempted to commit a cover up because he was too coward to take on a big fish. Jane has always had guts and wasn’t afraid to go toe to toe with someone powerful or against Alan. I love at the end when she gives him the ultimatum. Alan cared more about pride and reputation than making sure justice and truth prevailed. I’m glad he got what he deserved. Go Jane!
The show was able to keep it’s humor through Jane’s heavy and tragic case with Stacy’s whacky case. Stacy is always so bubbly and optimistic and silly. She may seem as if she is an air head but she is actually quite smart.
It’s about time Parker moves on from Kim! It was getting really pathetic and sad how much he kept pursing her. Stalking is only cute when the girl enjoys it and not the I’m-gonna-kidnap-you-in-your-sleep-then-murder-you kind but the I’m-gonna-leave-you-hand-written-notes-of-sweet-and-sarcastic-sayings-and-books-on-your-door-step kind . . . Or maybe I’m the only one who likes that? . . . *nervous laugh; blushes; hides face behind a book*
I’m still holding out hope Grayson and Jane finally end up together! I was glad though that the show finally really focused on Jane’s case and the victims instead of all the various relationships. I was also thrilled all the sexual innuendos and such were nowhere to be heard or seen. Job well done Drop Dead Diva!
Fun Facts: Music included in the episode: “Everyday Ought To Be Like This” by Rabbit! and “Charmed Life” by Joy Williams.
