DROP DEAD DIVA SEASON 3, EPISODE 5 “PROM” RECAP & REVIEW

Drop Dead Diva Season 3 Episode 5 “Prom” Recap & Review

Jane is under evaluation for her performance at the firm as well as doubting her relationship with Dr. Kendal (a.k.a cutie neurosurgeon). While she deals with Parker’s evaluation, she takes on a case to represent a lesbian couple who have been banned from attending the prom at their school. Stacy becomes involved in the case because she had been asked to speak at the girls high school, Mountain Side, fashion club about being a model.

Grayson takes on a case representing Hank, one of the officers who works at the firm who wants to sue the mail order bride company he had met his wife Irina through. He had flown to Russia to meet her. They had hit it off instantly and got married. Two months later, one day Irina went out for groceries and never came back. Grayson attempts to take Hank’s case to court but the judge dismisses it. Kim has Terri look into Irina’s past and discovers Hank isn’t the first American man she has married and divorced just after two months. Tyler was the first American she married but his marketing job went down the toilet when the economy tanked. He discovered he wasn’t really in love with Irina and they got a divorce. But turns out Tyler and Irina had planned a scheme together. Irina would marry another American, one that had money, and would help take care of Tyler on the side. The problem is Irina had believed Hank was a rich man but he isn’t so she left him but still used his credit cards to help take care of Tyler and herself. The D.A. presses charges against Irina and Tyler.

While Fred and Stacy are enjoying coffee together, they are approached by a director who is looking to hire someone to star in his new commercial for some energy drink. Surprisingly, the director asks for Fred instead of Stacy. Tension begins to rise between the two since Fred isn’t taking acting as a serious art and Stacy feels insulted by his mocking. Meanwhile, Jane goes out to lunch with Dr. Kendall and discovers she isn’t the only woman he’s been seeing.

At a meeting with the principal of the high school, Jane makes it clear that excluding the girls from being able to buy a couple’s ticket and attend together is violating their civil rights. The principal promises to speak with the superintendent the next morning but when Jane exists the school along with Stacy and Julia, they find Julia’s car is gone. The security guard informs them he had the car towed because students are not allowed to park their cars in the faculty parking lot, except the security guard had been the one to tell Julia to park there. Jane realizes it was just a set up made by the principal. Any student who has their car towed away has an automatic three day suspension which now means Julia is banned from being able to attend the prom.

Jane takes the principal to court and the judge rules in her favor to allow the girls to attend prom together. The school cancels prom in retaliation of the verdict. Jane returns to court to try to force the school to open prom again but the case gets dismissed. The judge does grant the girls a civil rights case the following month. The principal calls Jane and the girls in for a meeting. The school makes the offer of reinstating the prom and allowing them to go as a couple if they drop the case. The girls decide not to take the offer because that means the rest of the gay couples in the school won’t have the chance to go to the prom. They decide to continue with the lawsuit.

Fred and Stacy head to the set where Fred will be filming the commercial. But it turns out Fred wasn’t meant to be the star of the commercial. He was meant to play the nerdy loser who takes a sip of the energy drink and runs into this tunnel. A muscle toned guy runs out from the end reciting the lines Fred thought were for him. The director tells Fred he’s taking it too personally, acting isn’t that big of a deal. Fred says acting takes talent and he doesn’t have the talent to act like a loser and quits. The director remarks how his bikini girl bailed on him and now Fred. Stacy steps in and takes over for the bikini girl.

Jane sets up a prom of her own for the girls to attend along with the rest of the senior class. She breaks up with Dr. Kendall because she doesn’t want to be the one of many. She doesn’t want to have to compete for his attention and deserves better. All of the students make it to prom and Jane steps out onto the dance floor with Grayson.

My Thoughts: The nerdy neurosurgeon was cute and nice but I’m glad Jane decided to break up with him. They’re relationship seemed to be going nowhere and they spent more time attempting to get together instead of actually spending time with each other.

It was nice being able to see more of a raw side of Grayson. He gets more emotional in this episode, especially when he gets a package from Vanessa and the only item inside is the engagement ring he had given her. Vanessa should have been more sensitive and sent the ring to his home instead of his work place. He has a moment in the courtroom where he freaks out at Irina and shows just how heart broken he is. I hope in further episodes both him and Jane begin to move toward a more romantic relationship.

It was great that Drop Dead Diva took on such a controversial case. It’s ridiculous that some schools do ban kids from attending prom based on color and sexual orientation which does happen today. I was proud of the show for taking on a more serious tone. The show still managed to retain the lighthearted humor fans have come to love thanks to Fred and Stacy. The episode flows far more nicely than previous ones and teaches a very good lesson throughout.
