Summary:
The odd couple of crime-solving returns in Olivia Blacke’s Death at the Door, where a ghost and her living roommate find another mystery on their doorstep.
Ruby Young is slowly adjusting to her new life in Boston. A big part of that is her unexpected roommate—the ghost of the woman who lived there before. For Cordelia Graves, she may no longer be breathing, but it’s still her apartment and Ruby is the somewhat unwanted houseguest. They’re both happy they’ve managed to become friends, which is a miracle considering they struggle to communicate with each other. Cordelia even set Ruby up with her old job.
When Ruby discovers the body of a delivery guy at work, the new life she’s been building hangs in the balance. The last time Cordelia dragged Ruby into a murder investigation, it was almost two ghosts living in the apartment, not one. Determined to protect Ruby, Cordelia tries to shield her from the investigation, but Ruby has other ideas. It will take both of them working together to navigate the fine line between the dead and the living to bring a killer to light. (Goodreads)
Review:
Death at the Door is the second book in the Ruby and Cordelia Mystery series by Olivia Blacke. First and foremost, I must say – I am really enjoying this series! I do hope it continues 🙂
Death at the Door commences where A New Lease on Death ended. Ruby Young is settling in to her new life – a new job and living with the Cordelia Graves, the ghost of the person who had her current job AND apartment before her. Talk about strange!
We learn more about Cordelia and her past and how to some extent that past influences what is happening to Ruby. We also see further character development of Ruby’s co-workers. Throwing a wrench into Ruby’s transition in her new workplace is a murder! So Ruby and Cordelia team up to figure out why the murder victim was killed and why. But alas, that does have certain peril’s for both Ruby and Cordelia. Here is hoping they can solve the murder before troubles prevail upon them!
I think what I like best about this series is that Ruby is young and innocent and Cordelia is not and this makes the partnership interesting. They work well together, even with the impediment of not being able to communicate directly, but they are developing a system (however imperfect it is). I like that both Ruby’s and Cordelia’s perspectives are presented. We are also introduced to Cordelia’s brother and we learn more about her back story which added more depth to the story, and possible future stories 🙂 Their crime solving methods are at times unorthodox, which is very fitting.
Will Ruby and Cordelia solve the murder mystery before other disastrous things occur? Well, I suggest you get the book and start reading. It is a title that you won’t want to put down until it is read!
This series is a bit quirky and an enjoyable ghost story (in a totally non-scary way). I shall wait with baited breath for further story telling of Ruby and Cordelia by Olivia Blacke.
