The story is about a girl named Leesa that is about to start college. She has a brother Bradley that is going to college, but somehow lost contact with him. Her mother Judy was bitten by a one fanged vampire and she never leaves the house unless it is at night or it is super cloudy outside. She is torn on how to help her mother and find her brother. They live in San Diego,CA.
She applies and is accepted to a school in Connecticut. Her mother’s sister -Leesa’s aunt and uncle live there. She leaves for school and meets her uncle and aunt. They spend some time together before she starts school. They help her move into the dormitory. Leesa learns her away around campus and starts to make friends. She goes over the last note her brother wrote her telling her not to find him. He went to the same college that she is going to now.
Leesa meets a girl named Caitlin who is kind of a wild girl. Leesa likes that they can do things together. Leesa takes a class about the history of vampires which she finds interesting. She meets a guy there named Stefan. Stefan is dark haired and looks dangerous. She doesn’t see him for several days after their first encounter.
Anyway, Leesa keeps up with her homework and keeping in touch with her aunt and uncle.
Pretty soon, Caitlin invites her to go to a party. Leesa accepts. She runs into Stefan briefly and talks to him a few minutes before he disappears.
Leesa goes outside and feels she is being watched. She sees a guy in the distance and he vanishes as well. The guy she sees is named Rave. He is a Volkaane which is a vampire hunter.
A couple days later when Leesa is running in the nature trails around campus she runs into Rave. Rave is intrigued by her and they start a conversation. Leesa thinks he is a bit weird because he wears gloves the whole time and he doesn’t’ have a phone or a car. Anyway, Rave leaves and she continues her run. She thinks about Rave a lot.
Leesa goes to the vampire class and talks to the professor after class. She wants to know about one fanged vampires and their history. The professor provides the info he has and wants to know why she wants to know. She goes through the story about her mother being bitten the night by one and how she acts now because of it. She talks about her brother and wants to know how she can get into touch with the vampire clan. She thinks her brother was taken by a female vampire,Edwina to be her consort or feeder. The professor tells her it is super dangerous to try and talk to the vampire clan and tells her he has no idea where they are hiding.
Leesa and Caitlin go to a costume party for Halloween. Leesa invites Rave to go because they have been seeing each other here and there.
Leesa goes as a pirate and Rave looks like a American Indian/hunter. Leesa and Rave leave the party to talk. They have been several deaths in the area –all teenage girls and they think it is vampire related. Rave tells her not to go anywhere at night for awhile. They kiss each other but it is a magical kiss. Rave has the power to kill vampires by kissing them. He has a energy that comes out as blue fire through his fingertips. His body heat is always elevated and he keeps warm. Rave finally tells Leesa what he is…she is amazed.
The next day in the afternoon it is raining. Leesa decides to go outside and sit under a maple tree with a umbrella. Out of the woodwork comes Stefan. He talks to her and she asks him a few questions. She wants to know where her brother is and if Edwina has him. Before Stefan can answer her questions, Rave appears and they look like they are going to fight each other. Leesa steps between them and tells them not to fight. Eventually, Stefan leaves. Rave is mad at her for talking to him but Leesa tells him the story of her brother. Rave listens to her story but tells her not to be alone with Stefan and be careful where you go at night.
Rave comes the next day to take Leesa to the settlement where he lives. They go through the woody trails around campus. When they are out of sight,,Rave holds on to her and they pretty much fly through the trees. She meets Rave’s friend,Drumlin and they have some honey mead. Drumlin tells Leesa about Rave’s powers and how he is training him to breathe normal so they can kiss each other. Kissing Leesa can be dangerous to Rave because if he loses control he will lose his power. They have another powerful kiss in front of Drumlin. Leesa is so happy.
A couple of days later, Leesa runs into Stefan again. This time, she gets the answers she has been waiting for. Bradley is being kept by Edwina as a feeder which is not a good thing. Stefan tells her that he can rescue her brother if she becomes his consort. He tells her that he will give her two days to think about it and then he will come back for her answer. That night she tells Rave. Rave tells her it is too dangerous..he tells her that maybe he can rescue her brother. Leesa says no to that idea.
Leesa goes to her professor of the vampire class early and talks to him about her situation. He doesn’t like the idea either, but he will help her any way that he can. The professor also tells her that he can help her mother if she can get her to come to Connecticut. Leesa agrees.
Leesa gets her Mom to come and visit. They plan to take her out at night and get the one fanged vampire to come out of hiding. Rave will help capture it enough so they can get some blood from the vampire. They think the blood from the vampire will help reverse her situation.
Rave captures the vampire and knocks it out. They draw blood from the vampire and inject into Leesa’s mother. Leesa’s mother recovers after a day or two and is her normal,happy self.
Meanwhile,Leesa has told her self that she will become Stefan’s escort to save her brother. She tells Rave and the professor of her plans. She will leave letters with the professor to give out to her mother,etc in case she dies. She tells Rave that after Stefan makes her his escort that she wants him to find her and kiss her to death. Rave doesn’t want to do this but agrees.
The next night, Leesa goes out to the edge of town with the professor. She meets up with Stefan and agrees to his plan. Stefan releases Bradley from the other vampires and talks to Leesa briefly. Stefan and Leesa leave.
He takes to a remote spot and bites her..she blacks out. Leesa wakes up in a dark room with vampire bites on her neck. She sees Rave looking at her. He gazes on her and finally kisses her.
Conclusion-Leesa saves her brother from the vampires and helped her mother as well. Leesa also lives because when Stefan bit her she still had some of the one fanged vampire’s blood in her from birth. Stefan stopped because it wasn’t good for him but still honored the contract. Rave kissed her and basically brought her back to life. Leesa and Rave are still dating but everyone in the family has met him now and like him. They don’t know the truth about Rave but that is okay to Leesa.
Other thoughts- I wish that they was a little more back story and interaction with Stefan. The story just kinda throws him in there at times and I didn’t like that. The first couple of chapters in the book kinda of drag…I would have preferred more action or intrigue.
I did like learning about Volkaanes..which I thought was very interesting. I think the author did very well with this book and would like to see what he writes about next.
