Eilidh is a fae living in the human world since she was exiled by the Kingdom for possessing the ability to do forbidden magic.
There is a serial killer running loose in Perth. The first body shows up right at Eilidh’s front door… well in front of the abandoned church she lives in. However, she recognizes that the killer isn’t human, but one of her own kind. The killer is a blood faerie that also is using forbidden magic, but his is dark and evil.
Eilidh is willing to risk her own life to go back to the Kingdom, to get help in dealing with the blood faerie. She encounters Saor, her childhood friend whom she was promised to. He is an earth fae that is a stickler for the rules. Will he help her, or kill her on sight? And, could encountering a community of fae, like her, that embrace their forbidden magic change everything for Eilidh?
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book. I went in with low expectations. However, the book wasn’t too bad. It was a quick read that was easy to follow once you could get a handle on those Scottish names.
This was not your typical fae book, it was a murder mystery with a magical twist. It introduces an element where the forbidden astral magic fairies can bond with druids to make their own magic more powerful. And, Eilidh meets a druid with rare stone magic that she connected with.
So, we quickly have our love triangle web as the evil guy wants Eilidh too. I honestly liked Saor, even though he is a bit selfish, but the book was really pushing for something romantic with the druid, Monro. I just didn’t connect with him at all. He felt like too much of a push-over to me, I guess.
Thankfully there really wasn’t much fluff or unnecessary scenes in this book. We got exactly what we needed to tell the story. And I was able to read this book rather quickly. The love web rectified itself, by the end, which was a bit disappointing how it ended. Overall, this was a decent read and I would definitely consider reading more from the series.
