Sophie was only 14 years old when she found her mate, which is unusual, especially considering she hadn’t met her wolf yet. He was with a group of other shifters, including a possible girlfriend. When asked, he told the others that Sophie was no one and walked away. The devastation of being rejected has stayed with Sophie these last five years.
A couple weeks after meeting Masen Sophie’s parents were killed and she was forced to bounce from one bad foster home to the next … human foster homes. She was alone for her first shift and always had to shift in secret.
Now Sophie has moved to Mount Pleasant, Michigan to go to college. And she encountered her first shifters. Not having grown up in a pack, she doesn’t know how to interact with them and she wasn’t aware she needed permission to be in their territory. Her new shifter friend, Casper, who she has nicknamed Sniffer, tells her that his older brother is the alpha. He volunteered to take her to him to get the proper permissions. However, she didn’t expect this alpha to be the mate that rejected her five years ago.
Masen was worried about taking Sophie’s childhood away from her after finding out she was his mate when she was so young. On the night he met her, he followed her home and gathered all the intel he could. He was so close to taking her and her parents home with him that night, but resisted. He wanted to give her a chance to grow up. He decided to give her three years, but when he went back to that house for her, she and her parents were long gone. He’s been going pack to pack looking for her for the last two years and has come up empty so far. However, when Casper brings his newest crush to meet him, Masen’s world changes. He finally has his mate back, and he’s not letting her go again. He just has to convince her to give him a chance.
“Don’t run, little one. I can see you thinking about it. Don’t. I will chase you, and neither of us is ready for what will happen when I catch you.”
Then there is still Roxanne to deal with. Masen hasn’t felt anything for her since meeting Sophie, but she still acts like they’re together. Surely now that he’s mated, she’ll move on … right?
I was apprehensive buying this book. It was one that kept showing up on my social media feed and I just figured it was going to be bad so I kept avoiding it. I finally went ahead and got it as I had a werewolf itch that needed scratching. I’m really glad I did. I really liked it and couldn’t put it down. I flew through this novel.
The book wasn’t perfect. Masen seemed to fly off the handle a lot and hurt Sophie and she was always way too quick to forgive him. I could understand once or twice, but he went way beyond that. You’d think he’d start to learn. And, some will have a problem with the fact he didn’t abstain from sex, after meeting Sophie the first time.
Masen does have his sweet moments too though, especially when a certain realization hits.
I think I would have liked more from Masen’s wolf, Leo, though. In the beginning we got a few snippets from him, but they died out as the book progressed.
I did like that Sophie had a little more junk in the trunk and wasn’t your typical skinny Minnie we often get in books. I hate that Roxanne of course always used that against her. But the boys definitely didn’t seem to mind.
I really enjoyed the characters overall. Especially Casper and Sam. They were quick friends with Sophie whether Masen liked it or not.
” I could kiss you,” I say jokingly.
“Ahh please don’t! I like living,” he laughs.
Roxanne was a piece of work though. Why can’t the boys in these books ever see these mean girls for the problem they are?
I’m a little sad this isn’t a series though. I desperately want a Sniffer book. Maybe one day …
