Summary

For Holly Englehardt, Christmas has always been a special day filled with family, friends, and a wacky tradition of watching Breakfast At Tiffany’s while dressed up in the stars costumes. . .…tiaras and all.

Holly’s biggest client insists on having a Skype call on Christmas day to secure a deal of a lifetime, which is fine with her, because this year she’s going to make a new tradition: celebrating Christmas alone with her cat at her snowy remote family cabin as family and friends go their separate ways to celebrate the holiday.

When things everything start starts to go array, Holly has to call on her hunky neighbor for help in order to secure the deal of a lifetime.

Will it all work out or will Holly pull the quilt over her head waiting for Christmas to be over?

Review

Well definitely a “short” story.  Though I have mixed feelings about short stories, I found this story cute, with enough “meat” in it to keep me interested and not too disappointed when it was over.

Holly forgoes some of her usual traditions at Christmas to prepare for an important business meeting with Walter Bassett via Skype on Christmas day – hopefully to get the biggest design deal for her firm, The Design Studio. The tradition is dressing up as Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast At Tiffany’s and watching the movie.  Off to her family cabin she goes with her cat (okay…really….you take your cat with you for a couple of days?).

The in-depth descriptions of her family members sure made me feel like I knew them.  At times, the descriptions were just priceless…had me chuckling a wee bit:

“Even with new tires on my old 1994 Mercedes, the roads were as slick as gopher-guts, making the trip a little longer than the two hours I had anticipated.”

Upon arrival at the cabin, the weather turns inclement and it seems that Holly will be there longer than the two days she anticipated.  The cat (Henry) quickly runs off to the cabin next door, where Holly meets her next door neighbour…and his cat Eliza. The following says it all between Holly and the hunky neighbour….you just know “something” will happen between them since Holly is such an old movie fan:

Eliza?” My heart jumped. “As in Doolittle?” My Fair Lady banged around in my head.

“Exactly.” A faint light twinkled in his eyes. “I have a slight fondness for old movies. I’ve been told that I have an old soul.”

Without giving anymore away, it is definitely a fun read.  If you have an hour or so to spare, I suggest picking this short story up and having a few laughs, swooning moments and an all around fun time reading this title.  I am sure to pick up more stories by Tonya Kappes.
