TV Guide brings us an exclusive interview from Esai Morales, star of Caprica, a new SYFY series that premiered Friday, January 22, 9/8c.
Esai Morales wants us to know that Caprica is no Battlestar Galactica by any means. “BSG is BSG, and we will never touch BSG because we’re not in that business. We don’t want to be,” he tells TVGuide.com of the prequel. “We’re trying to show that someone’s parents and someone’s pre-life is different than their children’s.”
Caprica is set 58 years before the post-apocalyptic events of Battlestar, and focuses on the flourishing, technologically advanced Twelve Colonies that eventually create the Cylons. Morales plays Joseph Adama, a lawyer and father to Battlestar Galactica‘s Commander William Adama.
Joseph Adema meets inventor Daniel Graystone (played by Eric Stoltz) when they both lose their daughters in the same terrorist bombing. Graystone attempts to bring the girls back as robots, and it’s from there that a “morally gray family saga unfolds,” Morales says. Find out what else is in store this season and why the actor thinks the show is similar to The Godfather.

I had the pleasure of watching Caprica premiere episode last night (thank god for tivo). I really did not know what to expect as I never saw the newer Battlestar Galactica series, therefore that entire storyline escaped me and I thought this would hinder my understanding of the show.
I only recall snippets of the original BSG show I had watched as child and in one scene from Caprica, where the Cylons were being tested for agility, I was immediately transported back to that memory. But as Esai Morales states “This is no Battlestar Galactica”, and it looks to be quite promising. I have officially tivoed the entire series.
Caprica stars: Eric Stoltz as Daniel Graystone, Esai Morales as Joseph Adama, Paula Malcomson (previously played “Trixie” on Deadwood) as Amanda Graystone, Polly Walker as Sister Clarice Willow, Alessandra Torresani as Zoe Graystone, Magda Apanowicz as Lacy Rand and Sasha Roiz as Sam Adama.
