Oliver and Chloe grew up together, their moms are best friends. And, Chloe and Oliver were always getting into trouble together growing up. Neither could resist a dare from the other, even if it ended with broken bones.
Unfortunately, as the two grew up, their relationship became much more tumultuous. It’s more like a roller-coaster ride with the highs and lows. Every time Oliver reeled Chloe in, he burned her.
They had an amazing weekend together in Chicago years ago. They even had plans to continue the relationship and make a distillery together and call it Brown Eyed Girl. They were planning to live together. Chloe quit her job to move to Detroit with him, but unbeknownst to her, he was already gone. He went to Europe to escape. And, when he did return, he made Brown Eyed Girl all on his own.
Now, Chloe is wanting to make her own distillery at Cloverleigh and Oliver offered to go into business with her and show her the ropes. Chloe’s family thinks it’s a perfect opportunity, but she sees it as a complete trainwreck. Oliver can’t be trusted. She knows that Oliver’s offer is the quickest way to get up and running, so she gives him a week to convince her to work with him. And, he takes her on a trip.
They go to a nearby island where Oliver tells her a story about a special heritage rye that could make their whiskey stand out from the others. It’s also advertisement gold. The island is the only place the rye grows. If they can convince the owners of the farm to sell to them instead of the rich tycoon that wants the land for a vacation home.
The trip is a success and they have a good meeting with the land owners. However, Chloe and Oliver’s accommodations for the night is a tent they’re sharing. Oliver promised to behave, but as the sun goes down, the chemistry between them heats up, and it’s not all Oliver’s doing either.
The two rekindle their relationship, and head over to visit Oliver’s family to celebrate his Gran’s 90th birthday. However, Oliver is keeping a secret that could destroy all their plans and Chloe’s fragile heart. A secret his family is about to blow wide open!
Can Oliver stop the trainwreck they’re headed for before it’s too late?
I’m apparently reading this series out of order. I was sure I had read this one since I’d read the one before it and the two after, but nope this one I had not read until now. I always enjoy a good Melanie Harlow book though and this one was no exception.
But first, let me say, Oliver was a complete jerk in his past! I don’t know how Chloe keeps falling for him, she should have written him off years ago and told him a big Hell No on this offer. I’m not sure how I ended up liking him at all. I guess he is the ultimate charmer as he could always bring a stupid smile to my face too.
I eventually figured out Oliver’s big secret and what he needed to do to secure the money for the farm he wanted to buy. Once you figure it out, the story does become a bit predictable. But, I enjoyed it just the same.
I wanted the couple to finally make things work. Unfortunately, Oliver was being dumb the way he was going about things, so I knew it was all going to come crashing down. Of course, that’s when books like these are the very best. The exciting and sweet ending. And this book did NOT disappoint there. I just want to see more from this couple! Guess I’ll just have to read the rest of the books for a glimpse of them! As long as Oliver doesn’t mess it up before then!
