OBS SPEAKS OUT: AN ALTERNATE FAN-MADE SOUNDTRACK FOR NEW MOON

In all of the months leading up to, during, and after the filming of “New Moon”, there was much speculation about what songs would be used for the movie’s soundtrack. Stephenie Meyer has a playlist and fans made their own playlists. In the end, Chris Weitz and his team had the final say on what songs would become the iconic tunes for scenes in the film. That creative team went through thousands of possible songs to narrow them down to the select few that made the final cut, selecting songs with the right tone as well as lyrics to fit with the feel of the scenes. As I thought about some of the songs that I had in mind and songs that other people had suggested in various fan forums, I started thinking about how badly things could end if the wrong person were put in charge of the soundtrack. Be honest, fellow Twi-Hards, you know that you can’t listen to nary a song on the radio or your iPod without thinking that it would be the perfect Edward, Bella, or Jacob song!

I want to preface this by saying that there is nothing inherently wrong with any of these songs, as I am a fan of all of them (they all came from my own music collection); but could you imagine how the movie might flow (or not) with some of these tunes thrown in? Some of my selections are in jest, while others might actually have some merit. Obviously, each scene from the movie would not require a song selection to go along with it – particularly scenes with a lot of dialogue – but this alternate and absurd playlist is for pure fun and entertainment value, and it truly demonstrates how hard it must be for the directors to narrow down thousands upon thousands of musical selections out there to find the piece that perfectly suits a scene and appeals to the audience. I know that I gained a whole new level of respect for the men and women who do this job. It’s no small feat!
