it-happened-at-christmasDescription:

Love is the best Christmas gift of all.

Free-spirited activist Skylar Davis is out of money and out of options. After using up her trust fund trying to save the world, she hides out in Christmas, hoping the kindness of friends will help her forget the reckless actions of her past. All goes well . . . until she comes face-to-face with one of her mistakes: the town’s gorgeous young mayor.

Ethan O’Connor likes his life drama-free and predictable now that he’s about to make the move from small-town politics to the Colorado State Senate. Then Skye blows back into town, as impulsive and passionate as he remembers. If word ever got out about their night together-the night he’s never been able to forget-the scandal could cripple his career. Yet as he starts his campaign, Ethan finds that, like the town of Christmas itself, he can’t get Skye out of his head . . . or his heart.

Review:

I started this book not knowing if I would enjoy it however as I got into the story I started to really appreciate the authors development of the characters.

Skylar Davis whose past lifestyle has her perceived as egocentric spoiled, wild and rich returns to Christmas Colorado broke from several bad financial decisions and pregnant with the town’s mayor’s baby?  What I liked about Skylar that in spite of her circumstance she didn’t give up. She was determined to make the best out of a bad situation. In spite of Ethan’s family’s reaction to her she decides to stand by Ethan and marry him, to aid in his quest for a senate seat but to do that she  felt she had to change herself. When her past threatens his success she decides to go home. There, she confronts her father and finds out her past wasn’t what she had led herself to believe or what she had been told. Although her love for Ethan is strong Skylar knows she has to be herself if there is any chance for her future with him.

Ethan had a one night stand with Skylar and fell in love with her. Although they have entirely different political views, when she comes back to town in the middle of the campaign of this life, he knows that he wants to be there for her and their baby, much to the chagrin of his mother and campaign manager. He is devastated when Skylar disappears after performing so well during the campaign with no apparent reason. He goes looking for her and when he does find her he has to make some startling career decisions.

The love story between the two is well developed by the author and keeps the reader wanting to read more. It is funny, colorful and believable. A truly delightful read both during the Christmas season and all year round. I look forward to other Debbie Mason books.
