Star Wars came out when I was 11 and changed my life. The story and characters were fun, but I was most amazed by the realism of the production design and special effects. Designer Ralph McQuarrie‘s super-detailed and distressed spaceship designs created a whole new aesthetic that dominates to this day. It was all silver rockets and flying saucers before Star Wars; now we get intentionally ungainly girls like Firefly‘s Serenity. Here are my favorite spaceship designs, most of which emulate McQuarrie’s style.

Lostzilla’s list is a pretty good one – however, although it gets a mention, Luke’s x-wing from Star Wars isn’t on there. Then again, I guess that’s not really a ‘space ship’ it’s a fighter …. meh – it would still make my list! I’m a rebel like that. I do agree that the Millenium Falcon and the U.S.S Enterprise deserve to be in the top two. Red Dwarf would be on my list as well (see below). What do you think of lostzilla’s list?
