MUST SEE CULT TV: FIREFLY AND DANGER MAN
It’s pure coincidence that Patrick McGoohan’s spy-fi series Danger Man, which evolved into the sci-fi classic The Prisoner, premiered 50 years ago on the now-momentous date of Sept. 11. McGoohan’s paranoid television shows ruled the ’60s and still lords it over our list of continually relevant cult-TV classics.
The shows on Wired.com’s short list function on multiple levels in our post-millennial cultural and political discourse dominated by ascendant freaks and geeks. BOOK PUTS TV SCIENCE FICTION INTO PERSPECTIVE
Science fiction has long been a popular genre in the book and television worlds, but two Misericordia University professors have decided to go boldly where few men have gone before.
They’ve compiled and edited a book that delves into the views of history through popular science fiction television shows. They also contributed essays.
David C. Wright Jr. and Allan W. Austin, associate professors of history, collaborated on the project to study an important genre that has been widely seen as “lacking academic legitimacy,” according to Wright. The colleagues developed the concept, wrote individual essays, solicited chapter proposals from other scholars and edited the nine submissions they selected for their groundbreaking book “Space and Time: Essays on Visions of History in Science Fiction and Fantasy Television.”

So what exactly is Nick Monohan’s job anyway? As police chief of The Gates, is he there to keep the peace, and protect the privacy of the community’s horde of vampires, werewolves and other assorted killers? Or is he there to enforce the law — including possibly prosecuting their previous murders? And just how much should Nick allow himself to buy into the idea that all of the creatures in The Gates have been completely civilized and domesticated, giving up their former predatory habits?

What do you think of today’s TV News? The most saddening is the finale of True Blood. It came and went faster that you can say “bite me”. Just when thinks started to pick up and spin out of control…it’s over. Now we have to wait another year. I’ll be honest it actually makes me less prone to get all hyped up about the series. What are your thoughts?
